Hello all.

I've decided to use my grandfather as my cosponsor and am confused about a few things. My grandmother is shown as a dependant on his taxes, on another post I saw here a woman was using her grandfather as her Co sponsor, but she was told at the visa interview that because his wife was a dependant on his taxes, she needs to have her grandmother file form I-864. Is this something I should do as well? Should my grandfather file I864 and my grandmother file I864A? Or is that unnecessary?

Another problem I have is that my grandfather is nearly 70 and therefore no longer knows where his birth certificate is, nor has he ever had a passport. Is there anything else he can use to show citizenship? He's a natural born citizen.

Thank you!

hi

It depends on the country and the officer at the interview, it is not required for your grandma to file the i864A, but some officers ask for it

she should file it and attach the documents just in case the officer requests it at the interview

your grandpa should get a copy of his birth certificate, he needs proof that he is a USC

To be safe, you can have your grandmother complete an I864A. Although it technically isn't necessary if you are only using your grandfathers income to qualify. However, I have seen situations where because taxes were jointly filed and even though the spouse had no income, the CO still requested an I864A.

Unfortunately, that's the only way to prove his US citizen status. He can try contacting the courts in his county of birth to perhaps get a duplicate birth certificate. You can try doing a Google search to see what the process is.

OK so is she filing on my behalf of me or my grandfather? I ask because there is a question on the form that asks your relationship to the sponsor, is that sponsor as in me or Co sponsor as in my grandfather?

hi

to the joint sponsor in your case, who will fill out the i864 as your joint sponsor, the i864A is a contract between the joint sponsor and household member

she will also have to prove that she is a USC or LPR, that they are married (marriage certificate) and that they live in the same house

OK and for the interview we take original signed I864 forms, both my grandfather's and mine, and my grandmother's I864A form right? Plus all of their supporting documents? All original?

It says to bring financial proof to the interview with you.

For the birth certificate, search for the vital records office in the state your grandfather was born. You might be able to order it online and have it mailed to you.

Yes, thats right. Send original signed forms to NVC and copies of the supporting documents and if you want you can bring originals to the interview as well as all original supporting documents.
