Insurance is a crazy topics, they wanted for my mother $750 a month that's $9000 a year, so i decided to not get her insurance, and yes i do claim her on my taxes, she does not work. I do take her to doctor twice a year for check up, and they give her medicaid discount because she not working so far i paid each year for her medical and medication around $560 a year. and on taxes there is no penalties because the insurance is not affordable and she is not eligible for medicaid.

So what will happen if your mother has major illness? (touch wood!)

Done with K1, AOS and ROC

I thought if you claimed them on your taxes, then you should be able to add them to your insurance (assuming you have insurance)....again, this is just what I thought...I certainly don't know.

Employers only allow yourself and your spouse and children, parents cannot be covered.

I did read through that link above by ebunoluwa where they got the parents insurance through healthcare.gov and the premium tax credit for $100/month, but the argument is whether that is something that is allowed according to the IRS or not because of the following line in red:

5. Who is eligible for the premium tax credit?

You are eligible for the premium tax credit if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • Have household income that falls within a certain range (see question 7).
  • Do not file a Married Filing Separately tax return ((unless you qualify for a special rule that allows certain victims of domestic abuse and spousal abandonment to claim the premium tax credit using the Married Filing Separately filing status (see questions 9 and 10));
  • Cannot be claimed as a dependent by another person

Employees does not provide insurance for parent under my insurance. @MerryTouth to response to your question, if she had a major accident she will fall under emergency medicaid, and she will not pay either the sponsor. also i do check up for her each year in case something show up that is ill we will have enough time to send home for treatment.

Did you not read what jan posted on page 1?

Doesn't matter if you actually claim them or not -- as it says, you are only eligible if you cannot be claimed as a dependent, it doesn't say that you actually have to be claimed. It's written this way precisely to avoid what you suggest doing -- not claiming a dependent so they can get a benefit they might not qualify for as yur dependent.

Who can be your dependent?

#1-you must have provided at least half of the person’s total support for the year — food, shelter, clothing, etc.

Plus-

Dependents can have their own tax returns, and even be married, but they must not have filed a joint tax return for the year unless it’s just to claim a refund.
They must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a resident alien.
They must have a taxpayer identification number.
The person cannot have a gross yearly income over $4,000. (That’s the amount for 2015 returns — it usually changes each year.)
The person can’t be a qualifying child dependent of you or another person. That means you can’t claim the person if someone else could.
The person must be either related to you or must have lived with you all year as a member of your household.
So again depending on your state and the specifics they may or may not qualify for Obamacare.
