Doesn't every culture have a few crazy people that you have to tolerate whether you like it or not? As for the employer - surely that's up to them, but it doesn't make sense to hire and retain people who won't do the job they are paid to do.

Is the implication here that beyond this one story, this sort of thing is widespread across the country?

Is there any evidence for that?

It seems to be taking hold in Minneapolis. It's incremintallism. They get one accommodation and then they try for another. Soon we are giving up our culture in the name of tolerance.

As for the employers hiring and retaining people that will do the job goes, if they deny someone a job because of their religious beliefs then they open up themselves for a discrimination lawsuit. The few are using our own laws and inclusiveness against us.

I remember that story. I'm just wondering whether all this is just yet another example of sensationalist news reporting, to give more attention to a few obviously crazy people (to appeal to the xenophobic undercurrent) than is really merited or reflects the national picture.

Certainly, I've never experienced anything like this over here. I wonder who here has...

But who is they? Are you really telling me that you don't have to deal with a whole variety of irritating people in your day to day life? Jobsworths down the local post office, surly waiting staff at restaurants etc. I'm not sure this is really any different...

Irritating is one thing. Someone refusing to do their job in the name of their religion is another. Your sidestepping again.

Why? - people don't do their jobs for any number of reasons, simple laziness being the most common. Personally I don't really care why they won't do it, but if it affects my being able to buy certain products or receive certain services then obviously thats material for a store complaint.

Have you directly experienced this kind of thing? If so, where?

But this is not about religous concerns, obviously.
What is it about then? Are they just trying to piss us off?

Those folks are, in many ways, more American than you'd think. At least in this respect: They know it's worth a shot to play the religous card in order to either get a position they'd rather have at this company or get a judgement or settlement that can be deposited in a bank account.

Don't be fooled, if this was a religous issue, the clerk would have never considered working in this position. Besides, should the clerk not also have problems with non-halal beef and chicken? ;)

You're right, I'm damned grateful the Christians allowed my people into the country. They knew we were inferior yet they allowed us to come in. Wow, I should really reevaluate my priorities. How can I better show respect to the benevolent Christians?

Thats pretty cynical and racist. I also find it insulting.

Do explain.

Your implying that Christians think the Jews are inferior. I don't think that way and unless your talking to a skinhead I don't know of any Christian that thinks that way.

i have a funny store - reverse of the situation. i found it funny, but i'm sure the victim didnt.

a friend of mine had returned from Hajj (yearly pilgrimage to Mecca to be performed atleast once in a Muslims lifetime). DFW has its fair share of Somali's. And many of them drive cabs. Anyways, he jumps into a cab at the airport upon returning from Hajj. It's him and his sister. They get in, and the cab driver asks them if they are Muslim. They say 'yea, we're just getting back from Hajj' - they assumed he too was Muslim - as are like 99.99 percent of Somali cabbies around here. He says 'sorry I don't take terrorists' - at which both of them are dumbfounded. They almost think he's being witty, or funny. But he's damn serious. They ask him 'Arent you Muslim?' at which he gets even more irate - saying no, he's not and how he hates it when everyone thinks he some damn terrorist and that he will not take them home and they should get out of his cab. My friends very annoyed and angered - stop's dropping the 'N' bomb - saying stuff like 'your just a n@#$ blah blah blah'. Hahha, then this anamoly of a cabbie tells these guys to go back home - to their countries. This guy, evidentally has a thick accent, is obviously an immigrant whereas my friend is second generation! And he's telling him to go back home?!?!

They filed a complaint, etc - but who on earth would even believe it. It's so ridiculous.

She said "they knew we were inferior"... which refers to attitudes of that time. The statement is true in that context.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
