My boyfriend and I are living together in his country at the moment so I don't have a job in the U.S. I am living here until we can go back to America together. My grandma is gonna be the joint sponsor since she has a steady job and is very much above the poverty line. She is self employed and sent me her tax returns from 2014. What else should I have her send me? Also on her tax returns, everyone says to look at line 22 but line 22 says "amount you want refunded to you" and it is blank.

Firstly is doesn't matter if she didn't get a return. Just means that she didn't overpay her taxes.

Secondly it is very clear on the instruction on what to send with the affidavit of support.

2014 taxes are nearly out of date for the the current year up until the 18th of April as there is a holiday on the 15th this year.

You will need to send 2015 taxes 2014 and 2013 taxes. Along with copy of her passport. That's all she will need to send if she is a USC from birth.

Just want to point out that it is not very clear on the instructions for the I-134 what you need to provide. A K-1 does not use the I-864. That being said, the I-864 instructions can be very helpful, even when filling out an I-134. You will need most recent return, which will be 2015 by the time you interview. Line 22 of the 1040 is Total Income > https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf

Be sure to provide a complete copy of the return with all forms, schedules, W-2s and/or 1099s. Since she is self-employed, you should probably provide the 2014 and 2013 returns as well, to show income stability.

If you need to provide proof that the co-sponsor is a USC or LPR, then use a copy of US birth cert, naturalization, bio page of US passport, or front and back copy of green card. Check with your consulate instructions for exactly what is required for the K-1 visa interview there.

You are not looking at the correct form. Line 22 from the form1040 that KayDeeCee linked above.

For a K1 petition the I-134 is held to the same standards as the I-864. Follow that form instructions and you ought to be ok.

I agree that you should plan on having your joint sponsor prepare the I-134 using the 2015 information.

Assuming that you will also need the joint sponsor for adjustment of status, the same information will be used on the I-864.

You should know that not all embassies request the same support documents so people who have processed through other countries may not be providing you with the correct answer for Turkey. Once the embassy in Ankara has your petition, they will email you instructions for the next steps.

If you want to get started in advance, here is what Ankara requests (this is copied exactly from the instructions):

"To substantiate the information regarding income and resources the sponsor should attach two or more of the following items to the affidavit:

1. Copies of his or her latest federal income tax return;

2. Copies of his or her latest W-2 forms

3. A statement from his or her employer showing salary and the length and permanency of employment;

4. A statement from an officer of a bank regarding his or her account, the date the account was opened, and the present balance;

5. Any other evidence adequate to establish financial ability to carry out his or her undertaking toward the applicant for what might be an indefinite period of time.

The affidavit of support to be submitted must be Form I-134 and must be accompanied by the most recent year’s tax return form. Co-sponsors should also include a copy of their US passports or green cards to their I-134 form."

Hope this helps!

For the I-134 at the K-1 visa interview, you typically need most recent tax return and proof of current annual income, which is a letter from employer and/or recent pay stubs.

Later when you are married and filing for AOS, you will need the Total Income from the last 3 years to list on the I-864 where it asks. You are only required to submit the most recent tax return/transcript then too.

Instructions for your consulate are vague, so just take what is typically needed, as I listed above. > http://photos.state.gov/libraries/saudi-arabia/231771/public/k1packet_001.pdf

Thank you very much. You're right, instructions aren't very clear for Saudi. I'll definitely send what you've listed, and if I can provide more details and proof for them I'll do it. Just to be on the safe side. I'd rather have too much than not enough. Thanks again!

You are welcome, and yes, always better to have something and not need it, than to not have something that is needed.

When is your interview? With it being so close to the 2015 filing deadline already, I would not be surprised if the CO wanted to see the 2015 taxes, especially if the sponsor is self-employed.

Your co-sponsor will file their 2015 taxes, yes? You will take a copy of that return, and the 2014 transcript with you to the K-1 visa interview. By the time you have an interview, 2015 taxes will be the most recent. You can can add on the 2014 return to show ongoing, stable income.
