Okay so I've been reading a lot on different websites and I am still unclear on the laws.

From what I've read I can use my licence for 6 months and after 6 months I will be treated as a resident of Florida and have 30days to get a Florida driving licence?

Is this correct?

If no, then how do I buy and insure a car?

My husband doesn't have a licence as he rides his bike back and forth to work as its close by so has no reason to get a licence.

Can anyone shine some light on this for me?

Since all of the States have different laws and regulations regarding driver's licenses, you should review this State of Florida site for more specific information: http://www.flhsmv.gov/html/dlnew.html

Good luck on your immigration journey.

be careful about assuming the rules for a tourist are the same as a new resident. There is a pretty good story in this forum from a Canadian who made that mistake in California years back. Its best to assume what ever regulations they have with a new resident from another state, are the same regulations that will apply to you. Plus the requirements of proving your immigration status in most states.

Not sure about Florida specifics (especially check residency as it sounds slightly odd from what you've said, I'd assume if you have a permanent address there you can show you're a resident) - however FYI on your other question, in CA at least we were able to buy & insure cars on our foreign licenses. Depending on what you can show about your driving/insurance claims history, your insurance premiums may or may not be higher until you get a local license (ours weren't but we have heard of others whose premiums fell after they got local licenses).

As previously stated, you need to check the rules for Florida. Usually the state websites will have info both for out-of-state drivers moving to the state and foreigners moving to the state. Some states also accept foreign licenses and just replace them for a state driver's license.
