Your interviewer was an idiot.

That's his problem, not yours.

You can try contacting them and getting your name change canceled, that should be possible, but might be a bit of a headache. If the only change they're making is to change your last name to your husband's last name, then you should still be able to get your passport in your maiden name.

Your naturalization certificate will have your married name, but your passport can (I think) still have your maiden name, and you can then use that as proof of citizenship when you need it.

Once you're done, you can write a letter of complaint to the supervisor of the field office and the USCIS Ombudsman and to your congressperson... or you can just assume that you're going to meet idiots in life and move on.

I think you should have insisted on keeping your maiden name if that's what you wanted, but I understand that it's a very stressful situation. Good for you for not losing your cool and telling him where he can put his suggestions.

JimmyHou, you are right I should have insisted to keep my name, I feel like an idiot now but I just felt so pressured and it took everything for me to stay calm during the interview without crying . Today I received my interview letter. It's on July 12th. And they changed the local office. I did my fingerprint at St Louis but my interview will be in Kansas city.

Hey Guys, so I had my interview today and I passed, the questions were pretty easy I got the first 6 questions right so she never asked the rest of them. However my officer was very mean and rude for no reason and maybe I am being too sensitive, when she came to ask the last questions on your application about if you were ever part of terrorist group or arrested and all that, she made a comment like" are you planning to go shoot gay people in night clubs?" referring to the shooting in orlando. I know they have to ask those question but that one wasn't in the application!! and just the way she was talking to me and how she said it didn't feel right. then at the end she asked why I'm not changing my last name why I'm keeping my Muslim last name? and if I'm planning to divorce my husband after i get my citizenship, I explained to her it's not something we do in my country and I love my husband, I'm not going anywhere I just would like to keep something from home, so she was like well u're in america now and asked me if I really want my citizenship saying that I need to forget about my home and my Egyptian passport once I become american. so I felt pressured and I said okay I will change it. I know I passed and I should be happy but this interview just made me feel horrible and made me think if I should call and see if they can keep my name or is it too late. changing my name wasn't something i wanted to do and my husband understand. you think I should call and see if I can or just try to change it back when its all done. I just don't won't to risk delaying it even more since we are leaving over seas soon.

Egy5, First of all its a shame you had no legal representation at that moment, the USCIS officer was completely out of line, your place of origin is no reason to bully you, you need not change your last name that was evident (and pure racism or bigotry) because you didn't ask for that beforehand and she can't make you do it, you should have called a supervisor right then and there and explain that the officer was harassing you and acting unprofessionally and unbecoming for a US officer, they should have replaced her and finish the interview with a supervisor present in order to safeguard your rights.

Now I'm not pretending to give you advice, let a lone legal advice, but if you research it you will find these facts to be true, I would call USCIS and comment your case ask to stop the name changing and possibly put you in a closer oath ceremony that does not require a judge to change the name.

If at the end of the day you decide to keep the new name for the oath ceremony, you can later go to court and explain your case to the judge I bet they fix it right there and then, now it will cost you extra to file to change your name back, to me its just so unfair USCIS should fix it. Just my 2 cents.

so I went ahead and called USCIS about what happened during my interview and see if I can stop the name change early, the representive was really sympathetic and she was shocked at how this lady treated me during the interview and insisted that I need to make a complain. she made me an appointment this Friday to go back in and talk to someone. but then couple of hours later the officer that interviewed me called me. she said she noticed that I made an appointment to come in and if there's anything I needed! I told her I felt uncomfortable with some of her comments and I felt like I was bullied into changing my name and that wasn't something I want. She was very apologetic and said she was sorry if she offended me blah blah blah, and my name will stay the same. I'm wondering if someone said something to her that fast when I called?or can she actually find out if I have another appointment in the system. it was very strange how her attitude changed on that phone call. I would keep that appointment for Friday! Just to be 100% sure that your name was not changed!

Tough question. If the officer was apologized then she's very unlikely to push through the name name change anyway. If she does, at your oath ceremony you'll just tell them the certificate is wrong and they'll have to fix it. So the whole issue would come back up again and I think she wants it to go away. I think it will almost certainly be alright and of it isn't you'll have a chance to fix things at the ceremony. But if you're worried you can keep the appointment. If you do, I think it's better to just focus on confirming that the name is correct without getting into the other stuff. If you still want to complain, do so on writing when you're done with the process.

Also To answer the second part of your question Your file is currently with the person who interviewed you. So that is why they were notified when you set up an appointment. Anyone you speak to use going to have to refer to that file and speak with your interviewer to get the necessary information on your case. The same goes for your appointment. They will either make a note about your situation and give it to the interviewer or they will just ask the interviewer to speak to you in person.

All could be true. Her actions could potentially yield loss of her job and prevent her getting any other federal job. She was probably too scared that this would be escalated to the field director level or maybe even beyond and decided to give you a call. I would still go on Friday and make sure name change is in place, and until you are done with the oath ceremony maybe not pursue her profiling statements. Beyond that all is fair, you could inform your congressman about the situation, file a complaint with the USCIS, office of civil rights, and such.

Interview: Date of your interview

Oath: Date Oath taken

Field Office: Your local USCIS office where you will have the N-400 interview
