It's possible that you pay more money without a green card.

We will only benefit education wise with the GC by being eligible for FAFSA; my husband will still pay international/out-of-state rates until he's been here for a year. However, residency requirements don't prevent you from taking classes; although they are more expensive.

It doesn't necessarily take a year for in-state rates. After marriage with a green card you may be able to get in state rates if your spouse has been in the state for 1 year. Some private colleges may not take someone without an EAD or green card or F1 visa either.

They have that limitation in Texas, but I think there is an exception for those that own real estate for the past year. I didn't know about that private school thing. Someone posted elsewhere that they couldn't get admission in CA without an SSN, which seems strange since international students aren't required to have SSN. Maybe they tried at a private university?
