Still no appointment letter for 2nd biometrics. My husband joining me in Ireland next week, knowing our luck my appointment will arrive when he leaves. Thankfully our Neighbour is going to look for it in our post and send it to us in Ireland. But we're not back in the US until July 11th so we may have reschedule again. Anyone have any problems with rescheduling for a second time?

What is early biometrics?

Once you get a notice, you might be able to walk-in and get biometrics before the scheduled date. USCIS is not required to allow you to get it, so there's no guarantee. But many will just allow you to do so when their workload is reasonable.

01-16-14 Received at USCIS

01-17-14 Check cashed out

01-23-14 Hard copy receipts received

01-29-14 Biometrics notice received

01-30-14 Fingerprint walk-in (knew that original schedule wouldn't work)

02-06-14 Fingerprint rejection notification + new biometrics notice

02-12-14 Original schedule for fingerprinting

02-13-14 Second fingerprint walk-in

02-21-14 Original second schedule for fingerprinting

02-25-14 Status changed to "testing and interview"

03-04-14 Interview email notice (for 04-09-14)

03-19-14 EAD/AP in production

How does it generally work?

You will never be guaranteed to get it. You just visit, and show the appointment letter. If the security (or anyone else) asks you why you came early, tell them the appointed date has a possible conflict and wanted to see if it's possible to do early. If they say you can't do that, you go home. If they accept, you get it. It is possible that no one asks - I did it for my first green card, and was not asked. I did it because I really needed the combo card ASAP first time around(things did go faster that time), but there's no reason to do so if you don't need one ASAP.

Had the pleasure of using my one year extension letter in conjunction with my expired green card for re-rentry into the states last week after a 3 week European vacation. On a scale of 1 to Panic Attack - it was relatively seamless. Aside from having to bypass the electronic kiosks and actually meet with a consular officer, it was really painless. They viewed my expired card, read the extension letter, stared me up and down and asked some vacation-y questions, took my fingerprints, made a stamped notation into my Canadian passport, and sent me on my way.

I wasn't overly concerned about re-entry but I know others have had some difficulty and wanted to reassure my February peeps that if you are sweating this at all - DON'T. This was the first time I have travelled internationally without my complete immigration file (have travelled out of the States plenty in the last few years but I have always taken the "beast file" with me LOL) and it was a total non-issue.

Happy travelling!

Thanks CanAm68 for the report. I have a trip to Europe coming up in July and my biggest concern is not the immigration officer in the US but rather the airline employee at the check-in in Europe that might not be able to handle/understand the extension letter correctly.

May I ask which airline you used on your flight back to the US and if you had any issues at the check-in in Europe?

Thanks a lot!

Hi Texan86!

I used my Canadian Passport for check-in with the airline both departing the US and departing Germany. The airline was unconcerned about my US residency status as I am a Canadian citizen travelling on a valid Canadian passport. I would not recommending muddy-ing the waters with the airline by using your expired green card and extension letter at check-in since you should still have a valid passport from your country of citizenship...?

But the airline still needs to have proof of a valid visa when I'm checking in at the airport. So yes, I can show them my valid European passport but without a returning flight scheduled, I'm pretty certain they will check my Visa status (which means showing them the expired green card + extension letter).

I'm just panicking a little bit ;)

Gotcha. I feel I can't comment on your situation because it is quite a bit different than mine was (I had a return flight booked) and I'm not quite sure that I fully understand it. If you are travelling to Europe with a valid EU passport, the airline couldn't care less about your US residency status. Now if you are referring to checking-in online in advance of the flight the airline will collect your visa details for the TSA, and you will need to enter your green card details and for that I just used the extension date for my residency expiry date and had no issues there.

Either way, I would call the airline in advance and inquire and then add a little extra time for check-in just in case.
