My step son just got his visa interview and was successful , he has a question that I can't answer and I was wondering if anyone could help? His Chinese name is almost unpronounceable in English, he was thinking he could change to an English name upon his entry into the US on his green card. Is this possible? thanks

He can file with the court for change of name after getting to US

There is a filing fee and each state is different / no need for attorney to do this as forms are online and the state site on computer will explain the steps

After getting new name, the former Chinese name becomes an alias and anytime he is asked "What addtional names have you gone by?'

He will have to include that

Once the court order has been issued, you will have to file an I-90 and pay the $450 fee to have the Green Card reissued in his new name.

March 26, 2009: We become a couple!
September 10, 2009: Arrived for first meeting in-person!
June 17, 2010: Arrived for second in-person meeting and start of travel together to other areas of China!
June 21, 2010: Engaged!!!
September 1, 2010: Switched course from K1 to CR-1
December 8, 2010: Wedding date set; it will be on February 18, 2011!
February 9, 2011: Depart for China
February 11, 2011: Registered for marriage in Wuhan, officially married!!!
February 18, 2011: Wedding ceremony in Shiyan!!!
April 22, 2011: Mailed I-130 to Chicago
April 28, 2011: Received NOA1 via text/email, file routed to CSC (priority date April 25th)
April 29, 2011: Updated
May 3, 2011: Received NOA1 hardcopy in mail
July 26, 2011: Received NOA2 via text/email!!!
July 30, 2011: Received NOA2 hardcopy in mail
August 8, 2011: NVC received file
September 1, 2011: NVC case number assigned
September 2, 2011: AOS invoice received, OPTIN email for EP sent
September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)
October 6, 2011: Case complete at NVC
November 10, 2011: Interview - APPROVED!!!
December 7, 2011: POE - Sea-Tac Airport

September 17, 2013: Mailed I-751 to CSC

September 23, 2013: Received NOA1 in mail (receipt date September 19th)

October 16, 2013: Biometrics Appointment

January 28, 2014: Production of new Green Card ordered

February 3, 2014: New Green Card received; done with USCIS until fall of 2023*

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal

ii think it will be more trouble than it would be worth.

He could just use a english alias, and keep all his legal name in his previous chinese name.

I personally know several Asian-descended people here that use their true given names on all legal documentation. They still go by an English nickname or alias for day-to-day things, simply to make it easier on us mono-lingual Americans. It's quite common, especially with the harder-to-pronounce names.

06/12/15 - Met online and started talking
09/25/15 - She came to the US on holidays, decided to spend a weekend to meet me in Texas.
10/02/15 - I must have done something right, since she came back the next weekend too! :whistle:
10/05/15 - Sadly, she had to return to China for work. We keep talking.
11/12/15 - I leave to visit her in Shanghai. A very beautiful city, if I do say so myself.

11/16/15 - My turn to leave for work. :(

12/10/15 - I-129F sent to USCIS lockbox.

12/16/15 - NOA1 email received.

12/21/15 - NOA1 hardcopy received.

01/21/16 - NOA2 email & text received. 36 days processing time!

01/25/16 - NOA2 hardcopy received.

02/03/16 - NVC received (date uncertain?)/GUZ # assigned

02/04/16 - Sent to Guangzhou embassy

02/07/16 - She's come to visit for CNY :dancing:

02/20/16 - Our holidays together are over *sigh*. Back to waiting...

03/11/16 - Packet 3 received.

03/13/16 - Packet 3 returned.

03/18/16 - Packet 4 received.

04/21/16 - Interview at GZ - Approved! :luv:

04/23/16 - I have to return to work...back to waiting for her visa to arrive.
