Filing taxes

Hi, I never did my own taxes so I am out of my element and forgive me if the below are 'stupid'.

1) my brother usually did my taxes electronically.. he should still be able to do them for me, correct?

2) I worked jan/feb 2015 so I am aware that I have to file taxes for those months and since I have POE'd in April, I will have to check off the 'exit' / last tax file as a resident, correct?

3) I started to get EI from Oct and as this is income, this can be filed on the same jan/feb 2015 form , correct? Also, the above field ( last tax filing as resident) would not cause any issues in relation with this EI income ,correct?

Thanks.

It might depend what kind of EI you received. My understanding from writing an EI 101 at a previous job was that in order to stay EI eligible you need to be available and ready for work which means within Canada. It might be different if the EI was for parental leave.

1) no. Only residents of Canada can do their taxes electronically. Yours must be paper filed.

2) yes

3) yes

Canadians who immigrate to the USA due to family reasons (ie moving to live with a spouse) can claim EI while living in the USA. You still must be ready, able, and willing to work but you do not have to be living in Canada.

NLR, thanks, I will have to get my brother to send me paper forms then, or is there a site I can take these off of?

With regards to the EI, do you still have to have a Canadian Bank account for deposit? Or will they deposit to a US Bank?

You have to have a Canadian bank account.

What I did was get a RBC Canada account and an RBC USA account. (you can also do this with TD.) You can open both while still living in Canada. This way you can transfer the money back and forth for free. Or you can leave it in a Canadian account until the exchange is better. Your choice.

I like RBC because they pulled my Canadian credit score to open a credit card in the USA. But they don't have any physical banks outside of Georgia. I don't have an issue with online only banking. I can't remember the last time I needed to walk into a bank (maybe like 2008?) so the online only thing doesn't bother me in the slightest.

But it may be an issue for some.

Hi, we have the same situation. I worked in canada from jan-june 2015 and I need to file my taxes. I requested my T4 from my previous boss. Can you tell me what kind of fillable form are you using? And are you going to mail it to the CRA?

Zhangziyi, sorry about the lack of response.

You can get the fillable pdf ( paper tax form) off the CRA site. See if this link will work for you. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/formspubs/t1gnrl/menu-eng.html

You will have to choose the most applicable form for your situation ( see below*).

I was told by the CRA ( you can try to call and hopefully get someone to answer any questions) that since we are out of the country, we need to mail in the paper tax form. We can use the Netfile software to fill in the information but to submit/file, you must print off then mail (International Tax Office, PO Box 9769, Station T, Ottawa , ON, K1G3Y4)

*As I did not do my exit tax return last year ( my taxes were done before I left) , this year I will be doing it and as per the CRA , I will be using the regular tax form 5006. If you did your exit tax return already, you may need a different form number.

Thank you tdotca.

So did you use the province of Ontario ( depends on what province are you ) not the income tax package for non-resident and deemed resident of Canada?

This tax return makes me crazy! I do not know where to start. I have my T4 now and dont know what to do!

HI , again sorry for not replying sooner. I have someone else who does my Cdn taxes but I presume it would be the Ontario regular tax form which, as per the CRA person with whom I spoke, is form 5006. If you are not too sure, it would be best to call them to verify.
