Jackson Councilman says' Let's throw rocks at police'

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes wants to send a message to police from other jurisdictions who chase misdemeanor suspects through Jackson.

He says he wants to send that message with rocks, bricks and bottles.

Today the councilman told reporters that police from surrounding cities put Jackson children in danger when they chase people on neighborhood streets. He says he'd like black leadership to team up and use force.

"What I suggest is we get the black leadership together, and as these jurisdictions come into Jackson we throw rocks and bricks and bottles at them. That will send a message we don't want you in here," he says.

Stokes also suggests taking court action against outside police agencies that chase misdemeanor offenders into Jackson.

It Can't Be True. This is a highly educated man who is a Man Of God and whose wife is a judge!

Councilman Kenneth I. Stokes was born and reared in Jackson, Mississippi. He is a man who puts God first. He is also a devoted husband and father.

Councilman Stokes was the first African-American graduate of Jackson Public Schools to serve on the Jackson City Council. A graduate of Lanier High School and Jackson State University, he is the longest serving African-American elected in Jackson City government. As City Councilman, he has been a leader in drafting laws for the betterment of the citizens of the City of Jackson.

He received his Juris Doctorate degree in law from Thurgood Marshall School of law at Texan Southern University in Houston, Texas. In 1989, he was elected to the Jackson City Council, and was eventually elected for six terms. From 2012 to 2015, Councilman Stokes served the people as a Hinds County Supervisor for District Five. He was re-elected to the Jackson City Council by special election after his wife, Councilwoman LaRita Cooper-Stokes, was elected Hinds County Court Judge. Councilman Stokes made his historic return to the Jackson City Council as the first member to leave, serve on the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, and to once again serve on the Jackson City Council.

Conclusion from all this: Judging from the wife's online photos Mississippi still doesn't have enough dentists and all a hundred thousand dollar education gets you in Mississippi is a job where you are still mooching off the taxpayers

so throw bricks and bottles at police cars, with one potential being a brick through the windshield and killing an officer.

such a shining example of black leadership.

I suggest he lead by example and just throw himself in front of the police car instead!

He's pretty rotund. I think he could take out a police car. Family photo. I wouldn't be smiling either.

I am waiting to see if the AG has a response and possible charges concerning the statements made by the councilman! Any actions taken against officers due to his statements should result in at least accessory charges against the brilliant councilman.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant issued a statement Saturday denouncing remarks a local elected official made about throwing rocks, bricks and bottles at police officers.

Bryant also called for an investigation to determine if Jackson Councilman Kenneth Stokes’ remarks “represent criminal threats against law enforcement officers.”

Stokes told reporters Thursday that officers from surrounding jurisdictions put Jackson children in danger when they pursue suspects wanted for minor crimes into his neighborhood, Fox 40 News reported.

Jackson Councilman Kenneth Stokes

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant issued a statement Saturday denouncing remarks a local elected official made about throwing rocks, bricks and bottles at police officers.

Bryant also called for an investigation to determine if Jackson Councilman Kenneth Stokes’ remarks “represent criminal threats against law enforcement officers.”

Stokes told reporters Thursday that officers from surrounding jurisdictions put Jackson children in danger when they pursue suspects wanted for minor crimes into his neighborhood, Fox 40 News reported.

“What I suggest is we get the black leadership together, and as these jurisdictions come into Jackson we throw rocks and brick and bottles at them,” Stokes said.

He said that will send a stern message to officers who want to track down young men who steal bubble gum, the station reported.

Bryant took to Facebook to criticize Stokes’ comments.

“Mr. Stokes’ remarks are reprehensible, particularly with the attack we have seen against our men and women in law enforcement,” the governor said. “I condemn any such remarks in the strongest possible manner. This is not short of an outright assault upon all who wear the badge.

He said he will be asking Attorney General Jim Hood to investigate.

Stokes defended his comments Friday.

“My position is this: When you have these police officers coming from other jurisdictions and they will not respect human life, then I said we should use rocks, bricks or bottles to try to get the message over: stop endangering our children,” he told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

The sheriff of Madison County north of Jackson warned Stokes on Facebook that law enforcement would not be intimidated by his comments.

“Any Madison County law enforcement that is attacked because of your ignorant statements, I will hold you responsible,” the sheriff Randy Tucker said.

Jackson mayor Tony Yarber tweeted that while there is a need to demand respect of jurisdictional boundaries, he could never condone violence against officers, according to the Clarion-Ledger.
