A BIG THANK YOU TO VISA JOURNEY <3 - TIPS FROM MY EXPERIENCE

I dont know what I would have done without this site and everyone who is a part of it. So many people that I talked to while waiting for my interview who used lawyers and it took them a year or two to get through this process and who had things done incorrectly.

If I could give advice from my own experience it would be to:

  • Gather all your documents needed for NVC as soon as you get your I-130 approved! NVC may go way faster than you think and having them ready speeds everything up.
  • Call NVC after a within a couple days of completing your choice of agent form and casually ask if it has been reviewed yet, if they say no and it may take ____ days, try again the following day and ask again, eventually someone will.
  • Call NVC and ask questions when your approval/interview scheduling dates are getting close, there's no proof but some (including myself) feel as though it triggers them to actually work on your case
  • Use the monthly NVC/Interview threads as they help answer questions and gauge when you can expect approvals and such
  • Get your immunization records ready for your medical exam
  • Don't forget to register with Canada Post BEFORE your interview (this was a careless mistake i cant believe I made)
  • Dont be nervous for the interview, it's a breeze in Montreal and expect to wait 2-3 hours from your scheduled time and dont arrive more than 30 minutes early as they'll turn you away

Again, Thank you VisaJourney - my life as I know it is about to start (L):)

Congratulations and I like your tip summary, especially the one about gathering items need for NVC as soon as you get your I-130 approved.

When did they say you could pick up your visa?

We had our interview in Montreal on December 1 and got visa in hand today (December 10). So about 7 business days.

Congrats Nicole _1228. Definitely a good tip about getting NVC docs in order as soon as you get USCIS approval. NVC moves to quickly!

Another tip: If your partner lives in a country that he or she is not a citizen of, and they want to have the interview there, make sure to send in proof of their legal residence in that country with IV documents. We got a checklist for that.

Also bring copies of EVERYTHING to interview. We sent in a letter from my employer to NVC and at the interview, the officer claimed they never received it.

Congrats Nicole! Unfortunately, the NVC doesn't move that fast for everyone - it was my bad luck to be stuck there during that big glitch they had this past summer, but regardless, being done with it all is the best feeling ever!

Congratulations to those approved! Energizing news for us. We're still waiting for our I-130 to be approved (it's been over 5 months...sigh).

Can you guys share what kind of questions you were asked during your interviews in Montreal? I don't know why but facing the a US Consulate Officer terrifies me. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated when my turn comes.
