Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : March 18, 2016
Embassy Review : It was an overall positive experience and was exactly as advertised.

My appointment was for 8am. I stayed at the Courtyard across the street and showed up at around 7:15am to the side doors. To my surprise there was only one other person there at this point. I had read other stories where 15 to 30 people have been there at that time. Anyway, when they opened the door for us at 7:30 there were still only 6 to 8 people there - really surprising. I realized later that all the non-VJ people were trying to get in the front door to no avail.

Since we were the first immigrant visa applicants through the door (there was no issue for spouses being there) we received the coveted number 1 ticket. They ask for your passport and interview letter at that time. Security was a breeze because we brought nothing except for our documents and passports. The guards commented on how easy it was for us as a result. There were people with bags turned away.

We walked down the stairs and waited in the chairs right next to the elevator, and they sent us up just before 8 o'clock. When you get off the elevator a greeter just simply seats you in the middle and tells you to wait for your number to be called. For immigrant visas like ours it doesn't matter where you stand on the elevator - you don't have to try and be first off.

Even though I had the number 1 ticket, it didn't mean I went in that order, but it was close enough. After about 10 minutes they called me up for originals, fingerprints and medical. They only asked me for 2014 W2's in addition to all of the other 'mandatories'. I was definitely over-prepared.

I sat back down and waited another 10 minutes and was called up for the interview down the hall. I had the pleasant guy with glasses that others have spoke about. I have lived in the States for about 23 years, so my line of questioning may have been a little different. Anyway, it was conversational mixed with intermittent questions (after the oath). They were as follows in no particular order...

- Where do you live now?
- Have you lived in any other country other than Canada?
- Where does she live?
- What does she do for a living?
- How did you meet?
- What kind of visas have you had?
- Did you meet while on your TN visa?
- Any trouble at the border?
- Have you ever overstayed a visa?
- Have you ever been in front of an immigration judge?

I didn't need anything else I had brought with me. I had front loaded my USCIS application with photographs and more and I noticed that it was all there in front of him. It took about 5 minutes or so while he was getting everything in order. I was handed the Welcome to the US paper and was told I would receive my passport back in two weeks. I was out the door by 8:40.

I found Montreal to be very professional. I think it goes well for anybody that is prepared for security clearance, documentation, and has a legitimate marriage.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
