Is my unexpired passport sufficient proof of my US citizenship or do I also need to send in a birth certificate? I don't seem to have a copy of the certificate handy (I'm an older applicant), so I'm hoping it will be enough to submit a copy of my entire passport to prove my citizenship.

From the I-129F instructions>

5. What Documents Do You Need to Show That You Are a U.S. Citizen?

a. If you were born in the United States, submit a copy, front and back, of your birth certificate.

b. If you were naturalized, submit a copy, front and back, of your original Certificate of Naturalization.

c. If you were born outside the United States and you are a U.S. citizen through your "parent(s)", submit:
(1) A copy of your original Certificate of Citizenship; or
(2) Your Form FS-240, Report of Birth Abroad of a United States Citizen.

d. In place of any of the above, you may submit a copy of your valid, unexpired U.S. passport issued with a validity
period of at least 5 years. You must submit copies of all pages in the passport.

Ok, here is a potentially stupid question. "issued with a validity period of at least 5 years." - does this mean the passport cannot expire before October 2020? Or does it mean that the passport had to be valid for five years at the time of issue? My passport is due to expire in August 2017. It was issued in 2007.

Had to be valid for at least 5 years at time of issue. Passports for adults have a validity of 10 years when issued, as did yours. You are good to go for using it.
