This gay couple tricked a 'homophobic pizzeria' into catering their wedding

In an incident reminiscent of Northern Ireland's #Cakegate, earlier this year Memories Pizza in Indiana caused a stir for announcing it wouldn't cater for gay weddings because of the owner's "Christian beliefs".

Crystal OConnor made the statement during a TV interview about Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, passed in March this year, which made her standpoint legal.

While Memories had to temporarily close its doors because of threats made over O'Connor's comments, a GoFundMe campaign to help the owner and her husband raised $842,387 (£555,010).

Since Memories is back in business, when Robin Trevino and his husband Jason Delgatto decided to renew their vows, they thought pizza might be a good way to feed their guests and prove a point at the same time.

Robin filmed himself trying to act "straight and confident" as he drives to the infamous restaurant - and kept his cool even when he was served by O'Connor herself.

After the ceremony, Robin and Jason's guests were thrilled to be told they were eating pizza from Memories. One attendee said:

Memories Pizza! You've broke your cherry [sic] and catered your first gay wedding. Congratulations!

How was the pizzeria "tricked" exactly? It looks like the gay couple had to pretend they were straight in order to be served. I'm all for gay rights and originally thought the pizzeria was dead wrong for not catering to gays, but it looks like these two gay men compromised their principles in order to be served at this pizzeria. And they gave the pizzeria more publicity.

I'm sure they've served gay people in the past without knowing it. I doubt they really care.

They cared enough to create the controversy in the first place...

I have no sympathy for the pizza place, but "catering" has a specific definition. I'm not sure you can order a bunch of pizza's "to go" and equate that to catering.

I doubt when this first started that the pizzeria had any idea this would cause a major controversy.

Yeah, I just don't see how the gay community can take anything positive away from this "trick". If anything, I see principles being compromised by the two gay men.

Well no. But they obviously cared enough about their religious / cultural values to take a moral stand against the gays by refusing them service.

I just wonder what they think about having served gay customers how they will assert their position in the future. Will they be asking their customers to provide copies of their marriage licence or some disclaimer about their sexual identity?

Just how committed are they to this? Surely this just shows that is completely impractical.
