Not paying health insurance premiums does not affect your citizenship application. Not filing taxes does, but not paying a bill does not affect it.

Hope that helps

hello guys.

i just wonder is there a bad effect on my future N-400 if our co-owned obama-care health insurance was cancelled because of no-payment (cannot reinstate anymore !)?

great thanks for responders

Yes you are required to have insurance. It's called the individual mandate penalty.

If you don't have insurance you will have to pay a penalty. Some call it a tax, some call it fine. Regardless you have to pay it.

There are exemptions from paying the individual mandate penalty, for example you may live in an area where affordable insurance is not available on the marketplace, or you may earn below the federal filing threshold. Talk to your tax advisor.

Not filing your taxes is bad. will affect your n-400. I think we all know that.

But not paying your total taxes due will affect your n-400 too. There's a question on the n-400 regarding, if you currently "owe" any back taxes.

but If i pay the penalty tax, then n400 will be not affected. right??

thanks

Correct. Paying your taxes is a good thing.

You seem like an honest tax payer, so the following may not apply to you, but i'll throw it out there for future visajourney visitors who may come accross this thread one day.

The controversy with the affordable care act has caused a lot of unhappy tax payers to find ways to get around paying the individual mandate.

For example, i think there is a provision in the act that the IRS is limited, meaning they are not able to enforce the collection of your individual mandate tax due. So lets say you owe $1000 in taxes and $300 of that tax is the individual mandate. The IRS could only use their power to collect the $700, for example they could sieze your property, garnish your wages, etc. to get the $700 but would not be able to use those same tools to get the $300. The only tool they can use to get that $300 is future tax refunds. So if lets say in 2017 you're supposed to get a tax refund of $400, the IRS will take the $300 you owe them and only send you a $100 refund.

So what some tax payers are doing is decreasing their W-2 witholding so they don't get tax refunds. Very clever if you don't want to get health insurance and don't want to pay the individual mandate either.

But, if you're an immigrant (really everyone) but especially an immigrant don't get clever with not paying your total tax due. You don't want to sit accross from an immigration official one day as he/she asks you why you haven't paid all your taxes...

Again - not having health insurance is not related to your N400 - how you're assessed on your 2015 taxes (and whether you have to pay a penalty)next year isn't going to affect your application now

but If i pay the penalty tax, then n400 will be not affected. right??

thanks
