I just did my oath ceremony today and for some reason I did not hear that they can process the passport on the same day which will help me not to lose my certificate because for what I read they will just verify it and give it back to you. Unlike on the post office that you need to mail the original. My question is what place will do my passport with no need to mail my original certificate? Do I need to ask the uscis when is their oath day again? Or court? Or there will be no way but the post office? Your reply will be truly appreciate thank you in advance.

oh i am sorry, what i meant was that if its true they can issue a US PP by just looking at your naturalization certificate at the time of oath ceremony sounds fantastic and i would like to do the same . i mean who would go for the option for sending the certificate via mail and waiting for it to come back.

Either Post Office or US Passport Agency or even US Consulates, they need to keep you Original Certificate of Naturalization. Apply in Passport Agencies are less riskier, but you have to have proof of travelling within 2 weeks.

Any place you apply for a passport they need your original Certificate of Naturalization. Passports are processed through the U.S. Department of State, not USCIS, and the Dept. of State needs the original Certificate of Naturalization to verify U.S. Citizenship. It will be returned with your new U.S. Passport. That is the only way, no matter which outlet you apply through. .

If you have concern, you can request a replacement Certificate of Naturalization, if lost or damaged, by filing for N-565. All you need is your A#, and a photocopy of your Certificate. Don't worry!

Congratulations!!!

This is very helpful, and I can offer no help to the OP, but we are one step from the Naturalization, so it was great reading.

Next time hope we can help someone, this was just great information.

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

If you apply at a passport agency, you will be given your naturalization certificate back after they take your application. Applying by any other means requires sending your naturalization certificate off with the application. Not all passport agencies require proof of travel. So check out the details for the agency you are closest to.
