2 days or 2 weeks after entry for SSN

I know this has been posted before, and I have tried searching for it, but all the posts I am seeing are from 2011 or earlier.

In the guide for applying for the social security number it says wait 2 weeks after entry. Yet in some posts I keep seeing people say you can do it right after entering because everything is electronic.

Can someone who just recently went through this process please clarify? We will be entering on a K1 soon.

My country doesn't require SSN for marriage license but we wanted to apply for both on the same day 2 days after entering the US.

You can try and if the SAVE database has been updated you will receive the SSN. If not, DO NOT let them do a manual verify. Just politely thank them and leave. Return after about 2 weeks and try again. It all depends on when they update the SAVE database that the SSA uses to look up your immigration status. I've heard people having no problems the next day and other having problems weeks later. Just make certain the name you use is the name on the visa. You might want to check the I-94 before going to make certain the name entered is correct.

We applied for a SSN 2 days after entry into the US with no problem, and we updated my wife's name on her social security card 2 days after our marriage with no problem. Just fill out the SSN application ahead of time and show up with your I-94 and passport with the K1 visa for the initial card. After your marriage if your spouse is changing his name, return to the social security office with a new SSN application and a copy of the marriage certificate.

See, there is no definitive answer. So I guess we will try 2 days after entry, and if they say no we will NOT request manual and just wait until after marriage.

I am actually changing my name so that won't affect anything. I am the USC.

I'm currently in the same boat. I would appreciate it if you could report in as to whether you have any success. It's hard for me to get to the ssa office without taking time off so your input would be appreciated. Good luck!
