  1. 1. Muslim flight attendant refuses to server alcohol. Christian pharmacist refuses to dispense morning after pill. Similar?

    • Yes. The situations are very similar. If one is allowed, so should the other.

    • No. Not similar at all.

    • This country was founded on Christian values so who cares if it's similar? Islam is a foreign faith in this country.

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) – A Muslim flight attendant has filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEO) claiming she was suspended from her job for not serving alcohol — which is against her religious beliefs.

...

“We notified ExpressJet Airlines of its obligation under the law to reasonably accommodate Ms. Stanley’s religious beliefs,” Masri [an attorney for the Council of American Islamic Relations Michigan] said at a news conference in Farmington Hills on Tuesday. “Instead, ExpressJet close to violate Ms. Stanely’s constitutional rights, placed her on administrative leave for 12 months after which her employment may be administratively terminated.”

...

Stanley converted to Islam about a month after becoming a flight attendant for ExpressJet.

“I don’t think that I should have to choose between practicing my religion properly or earning a living,” Stanley said. “I shouldn’t have to choose between one or the other, because they’re both important.”

She doesn't have to choose between the two, she just needs to do the latter elsewhere.

religious snowflakes are so irritating. if your livelihood and religious convictions don't align..maybe don't make your livelihood in the secular realm?

I think the law is something like an employer must make reasonable accommodations for religious beliefs of an employee. In her case as long as a second person is with the drink cart or what have you, then they should be able to accommodate her easily.

That being said it looks like Express Jet only operates small planes which I've found have 1 flight attendent...so in this case I don't think she can do the job.

When I was in the Maldives on a surf trip a few years back, the resort actually hire Indians to work in the bar for this very reason. I guess it would be a matter of choice for the flight attendant. If she took a job at butcher's could she say that she needed accommodation because it wasn't Halal?
