Yes he is automatically a citizen. Get his US passport. Don't worry about a hard copy green card.

He automatically become a US citizen upon entry to the US if all of the following are true:

(i) He is under 18 years old.

(ii) He is in the legal and physical custody of at least one US citizen parent who is a US citizen by either birth or naturalisation.

(iii) He is an LPR.

On the day all of those become true, he automatically acquired US citizenship under the Child Citizenship Act.

You can see how to obtain his US passport here: http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english/legal-considerations/us-citizenship-laws-policies/child-citizenship-act.html (scroll down to "How does the child get a passport...").

Filing an N-600 to obtain a certificate of citizenship is not required.

Waiting for his green card is not necessary, since the OP can use his endorsed immigrant visa in his passport as proof of LPR status. This is stated at the link I provided above.

The downside of using the endorsed immigrant visa instead of the physical green card is that you may have to provide separate proof that the child resides in the US. I'm not really sure how the plastic green card negates requiring this, but...
