Here's an interesting story I read today - First Canada...next will be other countries!

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file...MNGCAO9NSB1.DTL

Just ask yourself what country does practically every ordinary citizen of every country on earth want to emigrate to?

America is all about freedom - freedom for the "commoner" (common man).

Powerful people in control of nations and governments really hate this "idea" of power to the "common man".

That is the reason why America is hated (even by the Canadian Government).

And that is the reason why so many ordinary people want to emigrate to the United States.

If it were not so, would this forum even exist?

Gee, silly me thought that this forum existed because people FELL IN LOVE with Americans and wanted to live together with their significant others. I will be sure to tell my Canadian husband that the reason he is here in the U.S. is because he wanted to emigrate to the land of "freedom for the 'commoner'", NOT because he fell in love with me and chose to leave a country that he loves and move to a country that he never had a desire to move to. Thanks for setting me straight.

Their country, their rules.

And yeah, it makes me laugh too because of the sense of entitlement that many people feel just because they're American. US citizenship doesn't give someone the right to bypass another country's rules and regulations.

We're talking about entry requirements, not nuclear weapons.

Being an American, I don't see myself as someone who should be granted admission to ANY country based solely on my country of residence. When one visits, or plans to visit, another country you are subject to their regulations and laws just as YOU would expect someone visiting here to be.

Sounds like a superior elitist attitude to me, to expect the red carpet treatment at ANY border just because "I'm an American".

"Freedom and power to the common man" eh? I've always wondered why US citizens have this image of Europeans as being over-governed, yet happily accept all kinds of policing most Europeans would be shocked by ;)

It's like people who say about the private healthcare system that "our healthcare system is the most envied in the world", when in reality its looked at with a mixture of apprehension and incredulity ;)

I have always looked at it with apprehension....and I am the USC here! Believe me, there isn't much to be envied about HMO's or PPO's in this country. But the insurance companies know they have you over the proverbial barrel...you canNOT afford to be without some sort of insurance in this country.

this is noting at all new here, I don't know why all of a sudden its popping up in the news everywhere. Its been going on for over a decade, since the US and Canadian officials started file sharing. As soon as your ID is run at the border, they know who you are and what you've done, and most likely, your blood type if its on your file.

And it goes both ways. My husband cannot visit Canada because of a theft charge on his record, and my brother-in-law cannot visit the US because of an assault charge on his record. For YEARS Canada has had PSA commercials on TV about having criminal records and being able to travel, this *really is nothing new*.

Soon yes, it will be every country in the world will be sharing files, and soon the world will be closed to my husband and my brother in law. Ya spins the wheel ya takes yer chances. I'm going to have get there while the gettin' is good. Who knows when I'll be travelling alone. :P

If you have kids and you wish them to be able to go visit the foreign halves of their family, then teach them young what even a minor charge on their record will mean. You don't want them home alone while you're overseas, or over the border visiting their grandparents for the holidays.

For now, I'll just stick to South East Asia - no problems "here".

But, I will have to return to the U.S. for a few years anyway. :(

perhaps things will get better in the U.S. and things will return somewhat to "normal".

It's only natural for a nation to reject Foreigners visitation status or tourism because of prior criminal records. America is not special. Why would you want Canada to admit Americans with criminal records? If you run Canada's parliament, you wouldn't want a criminal on you land, do you?
