I'm going to humor you for a second here. So, because someone else was doing something wrong it is okay to participate as long as you didn't initiate it.

So "A" sells you stolen property. You are not at fault for knowingly buying stolen property because "A" stole it not you. You just purchased it.

So "A" is into human trafficking. You go to "A" and pay to have sex with a woman you know is being held against her will and is a part of sex slavery. You are not at fault for having sex with her against her will, while she is tied up because "A" purchased her, not you.

I get your logic.

Kinda sorta the same line of logic the current administration is using to justify DACA. Since your parents broke immigration law we are going to reward you for coming along for the ride!

Education is what you get from reading the small print. Experience is what you get from not reading it.

The Liberal mind is where logic goes to die!

Never has been about removing symbols of slavery, it is about removing symbols of the South!

Just the treacherous/insurrectionist southerners.

Sounds like you are upset about DACA but not upset about what happened with the actions of slave owners. ooookkkkkk

What legal rigamarole was involved in actually freeing the slaves? Could a former slave who had bought his wife and best friend from his former master and who was illiterate have navigated this?

Fascinating questions. Open to hearing actual legal practices if anyone can find some, but I imagine that much or most of this was achieved on an individual basis: someone made an offer, negotiation took place, and the deal was done or not done.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

So true. I never knew that blacks were also slave owners. That part in history class must have been "missed"

I'm curious, does this somehow make slavery in America ok?

i wonder if folksen study this stuff? I mean, there's black history classes in college and universities, with textbooks and instructional materials... interjecting this type of question leads me to believe that either you are baiting someone or you not make time to pick up a textbook at a garage sale for cheaps.

If baiting is defined as asking a question to gain a better understanding of a person's statement, then yes. My point is, were the majority of slave owners black or white? Do the black slave owners somehow negate white slave owners? Because there was slavery in Africa, does that somehow remove the burden of what transpired here in this country?

If you make statements based on your beliefs, you should be more than ready to defend said beliefs when they come under scrutiny. That's why when I post, I usually take the time to think before I write, and make sure my point is well understood.

Advocating the destruction of art, under any pretense, is barbarism

Living in a city where there are symbols of slavery and racism on every corner is pretty rough too.

ok.. i dunno, if'n it was my personal crusade, i'd be buying up used textbooks and sending them out to the inflamers that bother me. But that's just me.

as to the demographics on black folksen that owned slaves, i always read it was for both for protection and empire building.

Easily handled without destruction. Promote art supporting those that were against it. I'd support a giant art piece with Sherman smack in the heart of Atlanta.

Put it in a museum. Isn't that where old artifacts belong anyway? Why does it need to be hanging on the corner?

This would be a good idea, if those folks could be swayed. But you know as well as I do, the people who post such things aren't going to change their minds over facts. Those statements betray what they really think and feel about POC in this country, though I suspect they won't come out and say it.

For the few black slave owners that did it in the same vein as everyone else, I look at them with the same if not more disgust than their white counterparts. But no one does self loathing better than we do. :(

I'd settle for changing street signs and removing those statues.
