Medical Insurance

So, the short version. I'm looking for medical insurance and my spouce (the main sponsor), suggested I apply for medicade.

There are several things I brought up that scared her somewhat.

Me becoming a public charge is grounds for deportation on any means-tested benefits. I assume medical (for emergency care) is exempt from this? The other point I brought up is her having to pay back the government for any medical bills incured through government funded programs. This obviously puts a lot of stress on her.

I have been reading through this an is seems that I am eligable thought this "Applicants for Adjustment who have been granted employment authoriztion."

It states that I am eligable for emergency medical care, but not full medicaid. I understand medicaid is under the affordable care act to provide a better quality of living for people on a low income. http://info.dhhs.state.nc.us/olm/manuals/dma/fcm/man/MA3330-03.htm

Anyway, I am an AOS applicant that came here on a K1, got married and awaiting my AOS to be granted. I have EAD/AP currently. My partner and I share a home, she recieves medicaid and i have no insurance or coverage currently. That's the current circumstances. I just need medical insurance for pre-existing conditions and emergency converage and don't know where to turn. Am I okay to purchase insurance on the exchange? Do i have to look elsewhere? Can i claim subsidies? I don't want to claim off the state, put my partner in debt or cause my status to be put in jepordy. What do people do under my circumstances?

Any help would be grateful, thank you.

with EAD in hand, you can get some obamacare.

check it out online sometime.

You can get obamacare. My husband and I are paying not much money for full coverage for both of us. You can enroll now, getting married counts as life changing event. You can also consult with certified medical assistant in your area to help you choose your health plan. Good luck

Varies by State, I thought you only had 60 days for special enrollment?

Only a few areas allow Medicaid from the get go. I doubt yours is one.

Thank you for the responses. If it is only 60 days, then does that mean I could potentially face a bunch of fines later down the line? I was reading that you're required to have insurance regardless. Either way, I know there is a timeframe for insurance at certain times of the year to apply and didn't think that applied to people like myself as of immigration rules. I could only apply with an EAD not a k1, so it makes sense to me that I fit that timeframe only having been issued with one EAD recently.

EAD has nothing to do with it, just need a NoA after you file to adjust.
