He had spotted Sweat brazenly jogging down the road near Route 30 while dressed in head-to-toe camouflage. The escapee had then broken into a run, prompting Cook to shout at him to stop.

When Sweat had refused, the trooper, who is also a firearms instructor, had followed him across a field. As Sweat had approached a line of trees, Cook had realized he was going to lose him.

He had then started firing at the escapee, a source close to the case told ABC News. Sweat was unarmed at the time, New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said Sunday night.

In another interview with WPTZ, she revealed that her son had worked as a corrections officer before he joined the state police. 'He is a hunter and a good shot' she told the television station.

Some 1,300 members of law enforcement were involved in the search for the murderers, who left a clumsy trail of candy wrappers and liquor bottles in their wake as they attempted to evade police.

Matt and Sweat allegedly cut through cell walls, climbed along a catwalk and shimmied through a steam pipe during their 'Shawshank Redemption-style' escape in the early hours of June 6.

They emerged out of a manhole outside prison walls before fleeing, police said.

Earlier on Sunday, New York State Police had released details of Richard Matt's autopsy.

Officials said Matt had bug bites on his legs, blisters and minor abrasions that would be expected for someone who had been living in the woods. Toxicology results for the convict are still pending.

According to a detective who spoke to the Buffalo News, officers strongly suspect Matt was drunk when police eventually shot him dead on Friday after he broke his own cover by clearing his throat
