Is there a difference between a "tax transcript" and a "tax return"?

I intended to use my fiances 2014 tax return, the one (pdf version) he got instantaneously from filing online, for I-134 - is that correct?

They are different.

You file a tax return. It is an original document, with supporting schedules and forms.

A tax transcript is processed by the IRS and reflects your account at IRS. It includes the information from your tax return after IRS has compiled the information. It will also contain information pertaining to payments made to the account such as estimated tax payments, withholding, penalties, interests and settlements, as well notes on other IRS activity pertaining to your tax account.

You must pay to have IRS provide you a copy of your tax return (really, you should have copied the return before you sent it in).

Tax transcripts are free.

I will be using the tax transcript so the consular officer knows that this is the information I filed with the IRS; not just giving them a bogus return I want them to agree to (although I don't know if they know or care about the difference...)

How in the heck can they charge that much for a copy ?! Am I misreading something ?

It's to encourage people to be responsible for making and archiving a copy of their own return before sending it in.

IRS isn't a secretarial service.

No ... that is the tax return.

In fact, IRS states on their FAQ that it takes about 3 weeks from electronically filing a tax return before a tax transcript would be available; 6 weeks for a paper return which is mailed in.

We requested a transcript as soon as we realized the website was locked down. They were very prompt in sending one. :)

Kind of dumb that an agency that's supposed to be so secure can be broken into so easily..

You order it by requesting them to send it to you via mail. It's actually an option on the same webpage. You click the right button that works (because the left one - the online print at home is locked). You fill out some info and they send it to you in 5-10 days.

AOS APPROVED Oct. 4, 2017 * Green card in hand Oct 13, 2017 !!!!!

First K1 denied after 16 month of AP. Refiled. We are a couple since 2009. Not a sprint but a matter of endurance.

I just wanted to share a related/unrelated topic. Turns out that since I had a balance due after the filing due date, my transcripts won't be available until the end of May. It's because the returns with a balance actually post to their database several weeks after April 15th due date. Looks like I gotta risk the Internet cafe's!

I think you should be okay with the copy of the return because I haven't seen anything saying that tax transcripts are required by DoS; they just add another level of assurance. If your embassy is Germany, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I found out that since I had a balance on the return, my transcripts weren't available until after the end of May - actually received a letter from IRS today saying "We received your request, we just can't process it now. Do it again later." I am mailing him the box of our documents and some glucose monitoring supplies for my (future) father-in-law on Monday, so having them today would have been perfect. Oh well. Instead, I will mail that letter with the copy of the return and when I do get the transcripts, I will email the scanned ones to him, but I will block out the SSN and full address (probably even part of my name too), so if anyone down the road does get the document off some hard drive, they won't have all the info. But then the return copy and letter I send to my fiance will have my full info. This way, the officer won't suspect that I am hiding my real info from him. However, for your case, meh, getting the tax transcripts won't hurt, will it? It will take 5-10 days for your fiance to get them in the mail.

Btw, CONGRATULATIONS on your NOA2! I hope the rest of your process moves smoothly!
