Question on Not Valid For Employment SSN

Hello all,

When I was a kid, I lived in the US with my family. I received a SS card saying Not Valid For Employment, so I already have a SSN. That card was lost when I moved out of my parents' place, and I have since contacted the SS Unit at my local embassy and received a print-out with my number on it.

My question now is what should I do once I get to the US on my K1 visa? Already having a SSN means I don't need to apply for one, but will my print-out suffice when I try to get it changed after getting married (along with the marriage certificate)?

I apologize if this has been asked a gazillion times before - my searches all came up with people who had former cards that were valid for employment, so I thought asking would be best.

Any info/tips/advice is appreciated - thanks.

SSN is your life. You only need to use it on all applications.

To get a replacement, come to SSA office when you are here with your I-129F approval, K-1 stamp, I-94, you will receive a replacement with note "Valid for Employement with DHS Authorization" and you can work when you receive your EAD.

To remove note on your SSN card, come back with Green Card.

So, aside the paperwork, as long as I know my number, that's it - yes? They match it to my paperwork and request a new card.

I have a similar situation and plan to get a physical card a few days after arrival and replace it with the changed name after getting married. It feels better than doing both in one step.

I wouldn't mind going that route but because Reasons I have to get married immediately after POE and apply for AOS just as fast, so I don't have time to wait for the replacement physical card.
