NOVATO (CBS SF) — After George Lucas ran into a buzzsaw of opposition from his wealthy Marin County neighbors when he tried to expand his Skywalker Ranch studio, the filmmaker might be getting some payback with plans for one of the largest affordable housing projects in the Bay Area.

Lucas, the Star Wars creator is offering his own property in west Marin County off Lucas Valley Road near Novato for the project, with plans for a community of 224 homes right where neighbors said no to his studio expansion.

“He said ‘we’ve got enough millionaires here. What we need is some houses for regular working people,’” Lucas’ lawyer Gary Giacomini said.

Lucas says he will pay for the project himself.

“George Lucas said, ‘if I’m not going to do what I wanted to do there, what can I do that would be really beneficial to this community?’” Marin County Supervisor Steve Kinsey said.

Prior to selling Lucas Film to Disney, the San Anselmo resident attempted to develop the land as production studios, but he abandoned that idea in 2012 based on opposition from neighbors.

I don't know the full details but before pronouncing the neighbors as evil... My mother purchased a home in a neighborhood that was built around a golf course by the developers and owners of the golf course. The houses on the side of the golf course were nearly 40,000 more than the houses on the other side of the street.. That extra money went right to the developers (ie: the golf course) when all the houses and properties were sold the gold course changes its plans to ripping out parts of the course and installing high end condos and a few large cell towers.

The developers came by and asked her to sign some type of waiver and she would be given 5,000. My mother instead hired a lawyer (along with others in the neighborhood) and succeed in stopping the development. The golf course has not watered the lawn on the course next to my mothers house ever since.

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

They aren't evil, but they seemed to have it coming when they kept asking for concessions.

Good for him. I hope they have Star Wars figures on the parking spaces. That would be cool.

The heartfelt story of the .000001 percenter sticking it to the evil 1 percenters..

The HOA in question, is not IMO a group of 1%ers.

They are more like 5%ers

I took my queue from the first paragraph in the article:

No worries. I'm pretty close to the situation so I'm aware of some of the background. Unfortunately, I can't really go into any detail.

This was in the news again today.. He is going to pay 200 million to develop 52 acres that will offer affordable housing to 224 families.

so that's.. close to 900,000 dollars per family right?
