INKSTER, Mich. (AP) — A pastor leading a protest Wednesday outside a Detroit-area police department threatened to shut down the city until white officers are fired for the bloody arrest of a black man who was pulled from his car and repeatedly punched in the head.

The march in Inkster came a day after TV station WDIV aired police dashcam video of the Jan. 28 arrest of Floyd Dent, 57. In it, an officer punches Dent many times in the head while another officer tries to handcuff the motorist, who is on the ground. Dent's face and shirt were bloodied.

Police say Dent disregarded stop signs and refused to pull over, then resisted arrest and threatened them. They also say they found a bag of crack cocaine in his car.

Dent, who said he spent three days in the hospital with broken ribs, blood on his brain and other injuries, told reporters at a news conference that he was defending himself as an officer was "nearly choking me to death."

"I wasn't resisting arrest," he said. "When someone is beating your face, you're going to protect yourself."

And people are justifying what the officers did. That is just sad. Did you read the Yahoo comment section? They are police officers. They are to be good, public examples. If normal folks can't just beat someone because it is called assault, the same goes for the freaking police. The dude wasn't a threat.

I support the rights of crack users to ignore traffic signs and signals and refuse to stop when pulled over by the police. How dare they harrass this poor guy!

Not so sure he's a crack addict.

He says he was visiting a friend, and that the officers planted the drugs in his car. He also said he was tested at the hospital and was "clean" of alcohol or drugs.

In 2004, Melendez and seven other Detroit officers were acquitted of lying, falsifying reports and planting evidence. Federal prosecutors had accused him and another officer of being the "masterminds" of a conspiracy to "run roughshod over the civil rights of the victims."

Most crack addicts don't pop negative on a drug test. No criminal record. He has to be the most high functioning crack head on the planet.

Could be. I'm sure there are bad cops out there. But the track record for a lot of these stories of late isn't too good for the alleged victim of police brutality. My sarcasm was based solely on the original post.

We had two cases locally where police literally beat the snot out of a guy, then charged and arrested him only to have video turn up later showing the guy did nothing. Both cases resulted in officers being charged.

In Denver, if an officer yells "get your hands out of your pockets", and your hands are not actually in your pockets, that's police code for officer initiated butt kicking in progress.

I bet you he will obey police orders next time.

You act like an idiot around cops and more than likely it won't end well for you.

He was lucky he was not shot..........

The judge dismissed the charges of fleeing and resisting arrest. So the beatdown is apparently for _____ (fill in the blanks because IDK). Obviously the judge watched the video and you didn't.

It's sad. The guy's going to get compensated for this, officers will be quietly back at work, and the >99% of honest hard working officers will see their collective reputations further diminished by the malignant few. And yet they'll continue to support them till the bitter end.

Commenting and not watching videos or reading is the norm in this section. Did you expect something different?

He didn't follow orders

He also threatened to kill the police officer

That right there is good enough for the cops to tap dance on his head.

Add that they found coke or crack in his car.....

How do you know all that? There's only video, no audio. The charges wouldn't have been dismissed if that was true.
