IRS watchdog investigating email scandal: 'potential criminal activity'

Washington (CNN)The IRS watchdog investigating the disappearance of Lois Lerner's emails told a congressional panel on Thursday night they are looking into the possibility of criminal activity.

Lerner was the IRS official at the center of allegations that the Internal Revenue Service targeted tea party groups applying for nonprofit status. Congress requested Lerner's emails from the IRS and agency officials told lawmakers an unknown number of emails had been lost when Lerner's computer crashed.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration has since recovered a number of those emails.

"There is potential criminal activity," Treasury Deputy Inspector General Timothy Camus told the House Oversight Committee Thursday.

Camus did not elaborate on who may have committed possible criminal acts. And, he cautioned that the investigation is not complete and cautioned against drawing conclusions until all the facts are in.

"What we're looking at is potential criminal wrongdoing. This has the looks, feel and smells of being criminal. And the IG confirmed tonight that's what they're looking into," House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz told CNN after the hearing.

Chaffetz invited the inspector general to testify in order to provide an update on the investigation.

Camus told the committee that less than two weeks ago, officials discovered an additional 424 backup tapes and are trying to determine what emails, if any, are on them. The tapes are in addition to about 750 backup tapes the inspector general found in July, some of which contained Lerner emails.

The IRS had told Congress that backup tapes no longer existed.

"The IRS has a lot of explaining to do," Chaffetz told CNN. "Because what (the inspector general) told us tonight means what the IRS told us is just factually not true."

No IRS representatives were present at the hearing.

We know the IRS unconstitutionally targeted conservative groups. We know they illegally demanded, obtained, and held the donor lists of these conservative organizations. Now we learn that in 2012, the height of the targeting, the IRS was involved in a “secret research project” with this confidential, illegally obtained donor information.

It's been clear from the beginning that a "reasonable" person, referring to the legal definition of reasonable person, would actually look at the overwhelming evidence that intentional targeting of conservatives occurred, not once, but over and over, and over again. These targeted activities were intended to humiliate and destroy those who are in positions of influence. Everything points to the smoky source of inspiration: the white house. It's criminal, and way over the top. People need to go to jail.

I forget who, but some guy on here that claimed to work for the IRS, was trying to explain to us how the IRS Email system worked and how they were telling the truth. Anybody on here with any IT experience knew it was BS. Tapes are saved, and the desktop crashing BS was just that. That was such an obvious lie, that anyone with 10 mins of IT experience knew it was lie.

Of course it's all just another invented scandal, so says the deniers.

The deniers will be along once they get to work Monday to explain to us how some Republican somewhere in history had something remotely similar happen so it's ok.

That is always the last line of defense. It === We just can't logically defend it anymore so we will play moral stupidity. Blame it on Bush or Reagan and move on

I am the one who works for the IRS. I didn't claim that I knew about how the IRS backed up their email servers. I just stated that at my level the IRS gives you a small amount of storage space in your inbox. If you want to store a lot of your emails you need to place those in personal folders and back them up periodically so you don't lose them if your hard drive crashes.
