Our application was sent to NVC and hasn't arrived yet, do we need to wait for the case number or can I got ahead and get a police check now?

Once you receive letter from NVC about your case number, take that letter and apply for Police clearance

I think you can apply for a police check now, you dont need to wait for a case number. Plus a fingerprint police check takes minimum 30 days. Im so confused with whats required for the police check though: fingerprints no fingerprints, state or fedral.

its got to be a federal police check and I did it with finger prints but i was told you didnt have to, but i wanted to just in case! you dont have to give the case number but they are only valid for one year.

Ok heres a question.....is a national police check done by the victoria police the same as a national police check done by the federal police?
Because the sample of what it looks like from both the AFP and the Victorian police are the same.....

Just a guess here but do the state police just send it away to AFP?

If so then its all the same

The process for requesting a Police Certificate is different depending upon which state you live. The Police Certificate is a NATIONAL one - the same database is queried, but each state has its own process. The NVC requires a fingerprint check. The US Consulate in Sydney requires a name check. The instruction book for NVC is outdated and still states that an applicant needs a fingerprint Police Certificate from each state in which they've lived since they were 16 years old. This is incorrect, but several of us have been caught in this travesty.

So...the process is fraught with problems, especially for people in Queensland and New South Wales. You will need a case number if you live in QLD or NSW because the certificate is sent directly to the Consulate.

Do not count on the Police Certificate to reach you in 30 days. I would allow six weeks.

Most people wait until they get a case number from NVC and then apply for the police certificate.

Rachkate - you are correct - the certificate you get through the Victoria Police is the same one as the national one done through the AFP.

I just went to my local police station and you fill out the paperwork there/ do finger prints. Mine actually took 6 weeks :( but that was back in Sept so they may have been backlogged. I hope its faster for you

so just to confirm......i do require a national police check?

Rachkate - that's the ONLY kind of police check there is. Australia nationalized its police check procedures about three years ago. Your home state police department forward the request to the AFP. If I remember correctly, WA folk go directly to the AFP, but every other state go through your local police.

I am speaking from an IR1/CR1 perspective. Perhaps others who are familiar with the K1 can answer this question.

Duality,

In Australia, if you live in Queensland or New South Wales, your police certificate is sent directly to the Consulate, not to you. You MUST have your case number or they cannot match your certificate to your case.
