My child is outside the US and I can apply for citizenship this year. My question is whether I should petition him now as a permanent resident or wait until next year when Im already a Citizen? (given naturalization is about 4-6 months).

I think it is better to wait until you are a citizen, in my opinion it is safer that way .

You can file for him now and upgrade later once you have your naturalization cert/US passport.
