The documentation that came with my 2-year green card stated that the green card must be carried with me at all times. Fine. I keep it in my wallet. But now that the card is expiring, are we expected to carry the extension letter around at all times too? I can't imagine the men folding it up and stuffing it in their wallets... and I know if it's floating around in my purse for a few months, it's going to be in bad condition.

So, what do others do?

I dont carry my GC. I just carry my valid DL

-----Adjustment of Status for both Parents-----------------------------------------------

05/11/2018: Mailed documents I130, I485, I131,I693, NBC for Adjustment of Status

05/16/2018: Received Date/ Priority Date - NOA Received

05/25/2018: Received NOA Bio-metrics for I485 Appt: 06/10/2018

06/10/2018: Bio-metrics are completed

06/12/2018: Received RFE requesting for a Birth Certificate for both parents

07/28/2018: Responded to RFE, sent their non availability of birth certificate copy

08/02/2018: Online status changed to " Request for Evidence was Received"

08/29/2018: Made an info pass appointment requesting for expediting Travel document as parents had to travel India. Expedite request was rejected 

09/14/2018: I131 Parole document was Approved

Carry a photocopy of the letter.

Do not treat your current status (whatever that is at the time) lightly by failing to carry the latest documentation with you at all times. At the various stages, I insisted that Mrs. T-B. carry:

-- passport with I-94

-- copy of cover-letter for AOS + marriage certificate

-- copy of NOA1 letter for AOS + mc

-- copy of NOA2 letter for AOS + mc

-- copy of AP document + mc

-- conditional green card

-- copy of extension letter for 10-year green card

-- 10-year green card

Your chances of crossing trails with a CBP agent might be remote; however, most of them have zero sense of humor and are usually looking to nail somebody. Avoid giving them that chance.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Ah... a photocopy! I keep photocopies in my file cabinet, and copies on my computer, but never considered that a copy would be ok to carry around til the 10-year green card arrives. That would be much better than wrecking the original. Thanks!

Seeing as every piece of paper has another side not a bad idea to copy the expir[ed][ing] green card on one side and the extension on the other side. Fold it to the size of the green card and voila, your status is available for inquiring minds.

I do not carry my green card with me nor do I carry the extension letter with me. My green card is in a travel wallet with my Nexus card and my extension letter. The only time it comes out is for my monthly border crossings.

This sounds like an excellent additional suggestion.

It's a good idea to carry something. I very recently talked with a CBP agent, who said that they can detain you for as long as it takes to determine who you say you are.
