Without passing on scary, true stories, here is a timely reminder for all, no matter what your age.

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters...S.T.R.

My friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously.. Please read:

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, a nd then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.

T * Ask the person to TALK to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE

(Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today)

R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their

tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other

that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with

ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately !! and describe the

symptoms to the dispatcher.

While strokes are relatively unlikely to occur, they can (and do) happen. It's best to be prepared.

Pedroh...strokes are no laughing matter.

And FYI, young people can and do have strokes, kids have strokes and even BABIES can have strokes.

I'm not 30 either, but strokes can -- and have -- happened to people as young as in their teens and all twenties, just like heart attacks. This means there's something physiologically wrong and has nothing to do with aging or any of the so-called "normal" risk factors. Even if stroke victims were only those who were "older," we have plenty of members here on VJ who fit that criteria, so there's no harm in sharing the information. I'm sure that no one here wishes to become a widow or widower any time soon, especially after all the work it takes to get together with your SO.

Also GOD forbid someone near you might need your help, you do have parents, grand parents, neighbors everything in life is not all about you. This knowledge is free, what you choose to do with it is your choice.

Strokes are irrespective of a person's age. I was 2 months shy of my thirtieth birthday when I had my stroke. You are never too young to learn and be educated. I don't have a link to stroke information in my signature for nothing!

there was a guy at work. he had a stroke on the RAMP < flight line >

he was loading bags in the belly of the plane. he was feeling tired but, not really

paying attention to the signs.. so he got out of the bins. fell to the ground started shaking, seizing and vomiting. turned out it was a mild stroke. it was scary..

Dr told him CUT BACK ON SALT..

this guy is not over weight at all..

Considering that half my body was paralyzed and/or numb, I'm doing great now, with God's help and a lot of physical and occupational therapy.

My biggest thing now is a low tolerance of prolonged noise (my brain gets overwhelmed in crowds or in rooms that echo), and my left side is pretty much perpetually "cold" (my brain registers my arm and leg as cold, but if you touch them, they are normal body temperature). But I can walk around now just fine -- you wouldn't know it had happened just by looking at me.
