Anyone filed using lawyer - please advise

Hi all -

I am getting ready to file my green card application through my USC spouse. I want to get things right and was thinking of going through a lawyer. My question is: if the lawyer files your GC application including form G-28 Notice of Entry of Appearance as Attorney, WHO will be receiving the subsequent notices from USCIS (i.e., receipt of the application, fingerprinting, EAD card, and interview). Will USCIS send those to the lawyer or directly to the applicant (myself)?

My concern is if my lawyer gets all the documents, I have to rely on them to forward all the information timely for the next 6-9 months ... so just wanted to be aware ahead of time.

I believe each lawyer has their own rules. Based on people's experience here which is probably won't represent all lawyers, their lawyer get all notification at first hand and they would forwarded to their client. I had a friend here using a lawyer and all notification went to her fiancé's lawyer first. Better to get a term of agreement with your lawyer how to handle all these documents and communication with USCIS.

Attorneys can be very helpful. I hired a lawyer for one hour at the very beginning to review our K-1 application. She was very helpful and pointed a few things out that could be changed. I happily paid the $200.0 fee. I did not pay her $2,500.00 to file for us! VJ is an incredible resource. The AOS procedure is pretty straight forward and the guides/responses to posts here will get you through without a lawyer unless there are unusual circumstances in your case. I would avoid the hassles and money for an attorney if you can.

I hired 2 lawyers because the first one make all wrong.

She gave us bad advice and my paperwork instead to be done in 4 month as most, it took a year and 10 000 dollars to fix her mistakes.

My advise is get a good one that knows the rules and regulations in the state you are at if you dont feel confident doing it by yourself.

But (and this is my personal opinion) we could do everything by ourself

Visa Journey is a wonderful source of information and tutorials, and believe me, reading the posts here I have learn my first lawyer was cheating.

I am going through an Attorney and I still get a copy of all USICS docs sent to me.

My att also calls/emails me as son as a new doc comes in to update my process.

Just make sure you have a specialist in your field. Unfortunately they are EXPENSIVE.

Im sure there are some good mid priced ones out there but so many seem to be scammers.

I paid around $10000 for the whole process from start to finish (K1-CITIZENSHIP) everyone keeps saying I'm crazy but it made sense for us to do it and I am SO thankful that we did. Our process has been smooth and easy and super quick. (I had visa in hand 77 days after posting the K1 papers to the office!)

Just make sure they are good. But i would def recommend!

Hi,

I am going through a lawyer as well and so far I don't have to complain...I will receive my paperwork within the next two weeks in order to sign everything they took care of the rest. No headaches...just signatures needed on my part lol

J-1 Au Pair Visa :

09/29/2012 : Met with USC
01/14/2013 : Married with USC

AOS Timeline :

06/09/2016 : AOS package sent

07/04/2016 : AOS package received (finally I was dying over here)

07/08/2016 : AOS package accepted !

07/28/2016 : NOA1 for I-130 was returned to the USCIS. The post office did not deliver it to me !

08/07/2016 : Card/Document Production ( no NOAS, no biometrics...nothing ??? )

03/26/2018 : Green card received!

02/12/2021: Filed for N-400  online
