(K1 Visa) Biometrics Experience

If your wife filed AOS using husband's last name, you might want to read this.

3 weeks after filing AOS, we received biometrics interview for 1 week later.

So yesterday, we went, and because her passport ID name didn't match the

appointment letter we received (which you need to bring), they had us wait

about 45 minutes and talk to a manager.

First thing she asked was, do you have any US ID with name that matches

the appointment letter? Obviously the answer was "no".

She then asked, do you have your marriage license and/or certificate?

I said, "yes, its in the car, and I'll bring it right in".

After another 30 minutes of wait, they took her (digital) fingerprints, and picture.

The appointment letter simply said to bring the letter and the passport,

but we knew better ( ) based on dealing with SS office previously,

where they ask for things that were not listed as required.

So we organized complete immigration documents nicely in a small small file cabinet

and we carry that with us whenever we go to process her paperwork and she needs

to prove her identity at SS office, bank, driver's license facility, insurance, and all other

government and immigration related offices.

I suppose some places may allow you to do the biometrics without the marriage certificate,

but I saw number of people that got questioned this. For those that didn't bring the

marriage certificate, the lady had to go to the back office, and try to find some online

records (presumably from DHS and local county site???), which can take another

30 to 60 minutes...that is if she can find the record.

Small details...but I thought it may be worth knowing to save little bit of time and hassle.

If I had to come back, I would've had to take another 1/2 day off work.

We had the same issue. Although I did not bring our marriage certificate because we were following the instructions stated on the letter. I usually bring everything with us, why not this time I don't know..

I learned my lesson!

So anyways they were not going to let us proceed with the appointment. Of course I'm explaing that we followed their instructions on the letter and its a little misleading..(my opinion of course, hey we had a 2hr drive) Anyways, after looking at my wife's Visa they decided since my full name was printed on the visa they would continue with the appointment. But funny thing was, they never asked to see my ID to verify if I was the person on my wife's visa let along to verify I was who I was saying I was face to face. I don't know.. but after that I felt they were full of $#@!... they just like to give people a hard time!

But again, as I had said..I have always brought and provided anything and everything and too much throughout this long process. Why not on that particular day is beyond me..so I blame myself! The US government is not my friend, and have always provided more than enough info during this process so they would have no excuses! Well it showed on that day! I gave them an excuse! Just thankful it all worked out that day!

Thanks for the info,good thing i had my state id already even if i am just adjusting my status plus the social security is under my married name,but then i will bring marriage cert just incase,thanks for the info ?

Mrs. T-B. never had more than about a 10-minute drive (yes, very fortunate) to biometrics, Social Security, et al., but I insisted that she keep a copy of our marriage certificate with her at all times until she got the 10-year green card. You never know.
