Urgent help required for taxes

I'm not sure what to do, I hope someone can advise me.

I work as a contractor with my family, my father works with me and his girlfriend too. We all get paid with a check each week and sometimes the person we are doing the work for will put mine and my father's check together. My father doesn't mind this, it's just easier and saves time. I am going to be filing my 1099 for my taxes within the next month to get my tax return all sorted and apply for a visa to marry my girlfriend.

When I file my 1099 and get my tax return, will it just show my earnings or my father's too? How will this work?

Sounds like you're going to get two 1099's. One in your father's name and one in your name. Unless your family operates as business. I"m self-employed and get 1099's under my business name. How you show income on your tax return is up to you, but going to be very difficult if it's in your father's name.

Check those checks where your wages were put together, if the check was issued to your name, it will obviously be counted towards your income, even though your father was paid for it too. The 1099 usually gets prepared based on the checks that were cut to your name.

The 1099 will show the total amount for the year paid to whom. It will be up to you and your father to make sense of who gets what. You will probably be filling out a schedule C and SE to determine your tax liabilities. If the money was paid in your father's name, and more than $600 of that was yours, he will have to fill out a 1099 for you. You may want to both talk to an accountant,

It might be easier to put both people's wages on the same check on payday, but it will almost certainly be more complicated when you file your taxes, especially if both wages are in the name of just one person. Also keep in mind that unless you have an arrangement with the person paying you so that they withhold taxes, you should have been making quarterly estimated payments (if you make over a certain amount). If you don't have any such arrangement, then you haven't paid the IRS anything yet and shouldn't expect a refund, and you would actually owe money plus penalties.

Most likely you will file to separate returns for you and your father.
