Did This Father Take Social Media Discipline Too Far?

While I agree that she should be disciplined, I don't feel it should have been taken to social media. Public humiliation is not cool at all. There are better and more effective ways to discipline kids.

Exactly. These days you have kids cyberbullying each other over social media. Bit irresponsible to have your parents doing it.

how is:

Jones posted photos of his daughter, showing her face, with her hair styled in barrettes and what he referred to as ball balls. He also dressed her in what one can assume is age-appropriate clothing for a 10-year-old, with the words 5th grader on the back of her T-shirt.

public humiliation or cyber bullying?

Public humiliation? Oh please! Have we become that sensitive and politically correct? I can remember my parents putting together slide shows of awkward photos to show at my sisrer's wedding and she was only 21. Yes she was an adult but IMO that's far worse than what this father did.

He's indirectly protecting his baby girl. Who knows what trouble she could've got into with technology these days?!

You think humiliating a teen publicly is a good way to get her to admit her behavior is unacceptable and therefore stop doing it? I think you maybe haven't got a teenager in your home. She'll be continuing on the behavior because public humiliation and shame is not a successful technique to deal with unacceptable behaviors. I have no idea why you think this has anything to do with being 'pc' but that's just a red herring. Awkward photos in a congenial setting are not the stuff of humiliation and bear absolutely no relevance to what is going on with these parents and their children.

I don't agree with public humiliation of children or adults for that matter. It's a backward step but if you want to bring back stocks, put it into a manifesto and see how much public support that gets. FYI, I think this will backfire. Only when a person truly accepts their behavior is wrong will they change it. Humiliation is not a teaching tool.

I agree it's a poor idea to post it online. I think the intended lesson would be taught by taking away electronic devices and internet access.

I also wonder why parents can't seem to grasp nowadays that this kind of stuff can potentially float around on the internet forever. It's not just a "lesson" today, it could pop up again 10 years down the road. Maybe at her first job interview.
