Why take the time to do ROM?

What is the benefit of this?

For one - Your wife can renew her passport in her married name, that way her passport, airfare, green card all match ;) - What Hank said.

Also, it's for having the marriage recorded in your native country if you were married in another country. Technically, if you don't do the report of marriage, you're still considered single in your native country (that is if you got married abroad). :P

In addition, while it is not related to the ROM -- the Filipino citizen spouse can concurrently file to register for absentee voting (for Philippine elections in the national level; meaning president, vice president, and senators) while here in the US. I don't know how it is in other Philippine Consulates elsewhere, but in Los Angeles, upon entering the office they will also give you a form to register for absentee voting. It is optional but I think it's a nice privilege to still be able to vote. They even made it convenient for people to vote -- for those living far from the consulate, they will mail the ballot. :dancing:
