Police: Man Climbs Out Of Grate, Throws Smoke Bombs In Greenwich Village Restaurant

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police said a man climbed out of a sidewalk grate and hurled a smoke bomb into a Greenwich Village restaurant Friday evening, before climbing back underground and vanishing.

The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. Friday at Bar Pitti, at 268 Sixth Ave. between Bleecker and Houston streets, police told CBS 2.

The suspect emerged from the grate that leads up from the subway system and threw the device, police said.

The bomb emitted red smoke when a suspect wearing an American flag T-shirt hurled it, police said. The manager at Bar Pitti said an employee grabbed the smoking device and tossed it back outside, at which point the suspect ducked back underground and disappeared.

The incident brought the NYPD Bomb Squad to the scene, but no one was injured, police said.

As CBS 2’s Lou Young reported, residents and tourists in the bustling neighborhood were shocked.

“Apparently, a man came out of the subway grate over there jumped out, and threw a smoke bomb into the restaurant,” said tourist Jim Webb.

Webb said as many as 65 police officers responded to the scene.

“First thought was ISIS with everything going on. It’s scary. It’s nerve-wracking, as a native Long Islander coming to the city for dinner with friends and family,” said tourist Kay Maygothling. “I’m glad I didn’t bring my daughter.”

At least one restaurant-goer complained on Twitter that the red smoke stung her eyes, but others said it was not noxious.

Hours after the incident, restaurant customers filled the sidewalk café once more, under the watchful eye of a lone police officer. Some of them joked about what might have been behind the bizarre incident.

“It’s New York. We have troglodytes,” said Manhattan resident Hal Hayes. “They live down in the tunnels. They come out when they need some air.”

“Is your lovely little restaurant on somebody’####### list?” said Manhattan resident Cleve Harp.

It was not known whether the smoke bomb incident was a statement, a warning, or something to do with the restaurant business. Police said it was not related to terrorism.

The suspect remained on the loose late Friday night.

This sounds like a prank, but I know you'll clutch your guns a wee bit tighter because of it. It must suck to be scared of everything.

Looks more like a warning or wake up call to show the people just how easy it will be once terrorists decide to start their campaign against the American public. Everyone knows the fashionable and devout terrorist wouldn't be caught dead wrapped in an American flag!

Too late for that... It's already begun...

The irony is that if this person had come out of the subway and opened fire on the patrons, this would have been another story the motley crew would have dismissed as just another day in paradise... It is only terrorism if guns are not used.

And the knee-jerk reactionary extremists would have been in full-on meltdown that it was the guns that did it. As ever, both sides would be wrong.

This may well have been a practical joke (I'd love to know what the smoke-bomber was smoking when he did this :hehe:), but it serves to highlight just how easy it would be for an terrorist to cause mass casualties in a city like NYC. Or he may just have had a bad tofu lasagne there. Who knows?

Haha I have to admit it is funny to see a bunch of anti gun comments in here as the response to OP.

If you want to cause mass casualties anywhere in this country all you need is a semi automatic and ammo. Columbine, Newtown, Aurora... the list goes on and on, but it is far more expedient to pretend the real danger is some punk with a smoke bomb in the Village.

Maybe that's because arguing about guns is safe ground for some posters in this forum. When you can't make sense of other forms of violence, equivocate back to guns and you're good.

Arguing about the gun problem in America is not safe, so much as it is logical because it represents greater threat. And it always makes for good counterpoint when the less aware pretend that only terrorism they can't understand or comprehend is real.

Yet guns have absolutely no relevance to the incident being reported. They are just a red herring.

As it would be a red herring attempting to associate this incident with terrorism in any way shape of form... (that includes 'mass casualties' and other hyperbolic manifestations btw... )
