Hi VJ Members, I have a question.

My Drivers license expires the same day as my conditional Green Card . I already applied to remove conditions on my GC, and I currently have the letter of Extension from USCIS (since September) while I wait for my Green card . Question is; when I go to renew my drivers license, will the MVA give me A 10yrs DL or they will only give me a 1yr DL?

2 days ago, I applied to refinance my auto loan, and the bank pre-approved me - but they are concern about the above question. I told them, that I am positive that I will get my unconditional green card, because I have no criminal or marital issues at all. And we have a kid. I don't know if thats enough to let them approve me.

Thanks for the urgent response on this matter.

When I renewed my DL the expiry date was changed to match my birth date, with expiry after my GC expires. Total validity of the DL about 4 years.

For loans the lenders are generally very ill informed on how permanent residency works. I had no problem once I explained things to them.

What I've been READING here (not from experience) is that in many states they only issue a 1 year DL if you still don't have your 10-year GC by the time you are applying to renew your DL. At least, that is what I've read that most have experienced.

All the best!

This depends on the state. Also, I've read past posts about DMV horror stories where the employees didn't believe the extension letter held any value and they wouldn't honor it, so to say.

When exactly does your conditional green card expire? In Washington, DC, you can't renew your ID/LP/DL unless it is expiring within sixty days. Any time between sixty and zero days, you can renew it, but for foreigners they make the expiration date match your remaining period of authorized stay. In your situation, at the Washington, DC DMV, you would be given a renewed driver license valid until the expiration date of your extension letter. And that is assuming the staff understood that the USCIS extension letter was a valid document.

DL RENEWAL DENIED...

Hi Everyone,

Today, i went to the MVA to renew my driver license since it expires next week along with my conditional Green Card. I already filed to remove conditions almost 3 months ago and i got the letter of extension from the USCIS. So i went to the MVA, and after waiting for hours for my number to be called, i finally when to the booth, the lady asked for my current DL and Green Card, she looked at it and said, but this expires the same day as your Green Card, i replied "yes" and said "But i have a Letter of Extention from the Immigration" i a handed that to her. She looked on the computer for few minutes, stood up and went to the other booth spoke to her supervisor i believe and then took copies of my DL, Green Card and the Letter and she came back and said that she tried putting the Renewal of my DL but it got Rejected, She added, your letter most not have updated in our system yet. She said a lady from the Immigration Department will give me a call next week. Took my cell number and wrote it on a copy of my DL. I told the lady, is the lady definitely calling me next week and before my DL expires? She said yes.

I am happily married with my spouse with a 2years old child. And i have no criminal records, so i know there is no problem with my removal of Conditions. But what do i know!

I am very worried rightnow, I have never heard of something like this ever, and my DL expires next week, i can't drive to work with my DL expired.

Has anyone have any idea? I desperately need some advice.

Thanks Guys!!!

I still have my EU DL and am just driving on that for the time being.

It a murky grey area that is consequence of the 3 month window of application for ROC being shorter than the standard processing time. Someone isn't joining all the dots.

I am pretty sure, when you establish resident like in many of states, you are required to get driver license in that state.

I still have my EU DL and am just driving on that for the time being.

See if MVA will accept an I-551 stamp in the passport from USCIS. Driver licensing authorities are notorious for rejecting extension letters but do accept stamps.

If MVA will accept such a stamp, then make an INFOPASS appointment at your nearest USCIS field office to have the stamp placed in your passport.

When my wife renewed her DL in June, the Texas DMV renewed her license for 5 years, the normal limit on a Texas license. I did find out though that because they are connected to DHS, some process decides whether the license is for one year or 5 years. How much truth there is to this, I don't know, but I am also sure that this probably varies from state to state. Good luck.
