hi, I will have my interview soon in italy and on the Medical exam questionnaire it asks if you have any STD's. If I mark yes and state I have genital herpes, could my visa get denied for this reason?

Is there anybody who has already been through the same situation?

Your panel physician will discuss about treatment plan for you at the medical exam. If you omit it on the questionnaire, it will still show up when they do your blood work. I do not think they will let you enter the U.S. until it is cured or treated properly.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You should put it on there, but I don't think it would stop you from getting approved. They may wanna know if your fiance knows. I'm not honestly sure about that part.

What diseases prevent non-U.S. citizens from coming to the United States?

Diseases that can prevent entry to the U.S. fall into three categories:

  • Any of the following diseases: active tuberculosis, infectious syphilis, gonorrhea, infectious leprosy, chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, granuloma inguinale, and HIV infection. (HIV infection will be removed on January 4, 2010)
  • Quarantinable diseases designated by any Presidential Executive Order. The current list of diseases includes cholera, diphtheria, infectious tuberculosis, plague, smallpox, yellow fever, viral hemorrhagic fevers, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and influenza caused by novel or re-emergent influenza (pandemic flu).
  • Diseases reportable as a public health emergency of international concern to the World Health Organization under the International Health Regulations of 2005. These diseases currently include: polio, smallpox, SARS, pandemic flu and other public health emergencies of international concern.

HIV infection will be removed as a communicable disease of public health significance effective January 4, 2010. At that time, HIV infection will not be used to keep people from entering the United States.

Essentially what this site says, is that you should have no issues with being denied, so long as your fiance is aware of your condition, and you're honest about it. It will come up on the medical exam later, as they do test for STI's and STD's. Be honest, or it will kick you in the end.

Just on what someone else said I work in the medical field and herpes cannot be cured it is mainly dormant and unless there is a flare up it will not show on any tests.

You still need to declare this as trying to deceive can lead to instant denial.

i don't think GH will be grounds for denying your petition and if so shame on them. There is no known cure for it only medications to reduce the # of recurrences or outbreaks. We usually will tx GH with Valtrex(valacyclovir) which will help with the reduction or number of outbreaks. Some people have it more with stress but with proper treatment you will be fine. I think they may want to know that it has been disclosed to your fiancé but, not sure. Good luck!
