Because Marvin is about as unassuming as Carlton. If my name was Duquan, it might be a different story...

So it's ok to discriminate. Got it.

And if your name were Duquan and you had an accent then it would be double jeopardy... (I should know, after all English is not my first language.... )

A foreign accent undermines a person's credibility in ways that the speaker and the listener don't consciously realize, new research at the University of Chicago shows.

Because an accent makes a person harder to understand, listeners are less likely to find what the person says as truthful, researchers found. The problem of credibility increases with the severity of the accent.

"The results have important implications for how people perceive non-native speakers of a language, particularly as mobility increases in the modern world, leading millions of people to be non-native speakers of the language they use daily," said Boaz Keysar, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago and an expert on communication.

"Accent might reduce the credibility of non-native job seekers, eyewitnesses, reporters or people taking calls in foreign call centers," said Shiri Lev-Ari, lead author of "Why Don't We Believe Non-native Speakers? The Influence of Accent on Credibility," written with Keysar and published in the current issue of the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. Levi-Ari is a post-doctoral researcher at the University whose work focuses on the interactions between native and non-native speakers.

Chinese ..... Tiger moms remember.... The competition to get into the right schools ....very severe ... It determines your whole life ... A 9th grade nation wide examine. While in china my wife heard a noise outside her window. A 15 year old girl jumped off the 4th or 5th floor to commit suicide ... She did not get into the top two high schools in her city.

You needed to get into the top two high schools to get into the top universities in china. . Your life is determined at the 9th grade national test. In China they have no hood disease or welfare. You can stand and hold a broom we have work for you..... Street sweeper

No, just a system that drives people to take their own lives if they don't score high enough. Nothing extreme about that.

And if your name were Duquan and you had an accent then it would be double jeopardy... (I should know, after all English is not my first language.... )

I call BS. There is no structural discrimination. No matter how many links or studies are done, it just doesn't happen! :ranting:

If Marvin dropped one letter from his name he would be "Mavin (The)". :o

And I'd be more awesome than I am now. Is that even possible?

Hey John, the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing VJ he didn't exist. Just saying...

I still think Val, Maven, and Penny are the same person. Maybe multiple personalities?

I am the walrus. Or a walrus (CABA girl).

When I married, there was no doubt in my mind that my very ethnic last name had to go. My ambiguous looks and white girl name make my life a lot easier than when I was more identifiably a brown. As someone who has been on both sides of the white privilege divide, the grass is definitely greener on the whiter side.

Parents understood that blending in with society was the best way to advance their children. Like it or not. If you want to keep disadvantaging your children go for it... I know a few black folks named Mike, Tom and David . They don't seem the worse for wear.

How is it if I named my child something that reflected his heritage a disadvantage? My children are part German. Something tells me if I went with Sven instead of Darius, there would be an issue for the latter but not the former.
