Police certificates

I am going to the Commissionaires tomorrow to get my police certificate done. The guy on the phone asked me if I need the fingerprint version or non-fingerprint. Does anyone know? (I do not have any criminal record if that makes a difference).

Also, anyone know how long this usually takes to get?

Thanks for your help!

Unless you've been convicted of a crime in Canada you do not need the fingerprint version.

Again, there is no need to pay for the fingerprint version unless you live outside of Canada or you have been convicted of a crime. See: http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/fees/reciprocity-by-country/CA.html

Thanks everyone for your replies!

Boston~Montreal, I will soon be making the Montreal to Boston move too! Very excited. :) Did you do your POE at the Vermont crossing near Burlington? And if so, did it go smoothly?

I crossed in Stanstead/Derby Line (Autoroute 55 to 91) - can't remember exactly why .

I usually prefer the 89 - (because: Heady Topper, Prohibition Pig, Ben and Jerry's, Skinny Pancake... ) - Still drive it often.

Do you need your certificate for the interview? or do we send it before (I-129 K1 package in my case)

Thanks!

I'm doing the K1 too. From what I understand, we just need it for the interview.

Do you guys know if we just go to our local police stations? I live in Toronto.

You can try there or the commissionaires

Thanks! I also read that you can even go to your local RCMP station/office!

I think police stations only do it in some provinces. I'm in Montreal and I think all over Quebec you need to do it from a private company, so just check ahead of time at your province's guidelines. No complaints with the Commissionaires though, it was quick and easy. ...though the Montreal office requires you to call ahead and book and appointment to get one, not sure if it works that way everywhere.

top right in the search window, type in toronto police checks, and u will get many hits. Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Go to YRP station in Hillcrest mall. They give you police clearance in person and they do canada wide name check with ur name and date of birth.
