Media scrutiny is what sets historic conflicts apart from the present day, although even during 1st world war quite a few people who signed up for King and country, glory and adventure etc. came to realise that there was nothing glorious or honourable about fighting in a war. Wilfred Owen? Siegfried Sassoon? I'd be very careful about trying to glorify things like that.

There is no glory in war, for the most part. With a very few exceptions, it is simply the common folk giving their lives so that those who rule can gain.

That's the part I have a problem with. Have no problem with defending the country from attack. Fighting in other countries so that people can make a Buck stripping their country's natural resources - not so much.

I think I brought this up in another thread. I read a book that's premise was that the oil companies wanted the Iraqi oil OFF the market, so that the price would rise. I can't remember the name of it, but it had a lot evidence backing it up.

Saddam ran it badly as a nationalised industry. Post war all of the production capacity is in the hands of private corporations. Even the new constitution of Iraq has been worded in a way that grants a major role to private investment.

What we can say for sure is that if there were no oil there, and Saddam was slaughtering people en masse, the US et al would have sat back and watched and let it happen, just as they did in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.

And for the record when Sandy Hook happened, he was there. And they were white. Shocking is it? If he did the same thing for Black kids in Chicago, he'd never leave and you'd accuse him of racism.
