After doing K1 visa, and form I-485, we get a letter in the mail that says its form : G-56 (N-600).

On the form, it says:

"

Reason for appointment: I-485

Bring with you: Your photo id and passport: official certified police clearance letters.

ask for: Other: Office leader

"

What exactly is this appointment for? Is it an actual interview? If so, what is the interview for? Does both the husband and wife have to come to this appointment?

Unfortunately, I can't see from your timeline how far along you are in your AOS. It would help to know when you sent the AOS papers, if you have already had your biometrics, another interview, or any other contact with USCIS in regards to your AOS.

I don't think you will know what exactly it is for until you are there, but do make sure you don't miss it and bring all of the documents they ask for.

A few months ago we got a letter that said we might not need an interview. The letter said they might waive the interview for us. We already had biometrics done. And we already have the "Employment authorization" ID card (also serves as I-512).

Does anyone know what this appointment can possibly be for? Why would they make it a mystery? The letter is pretty short and simple and just said "Bring with you: Your photo id and passport: official certified police clearance letters."

The letter does not have both of our names on it either. It only has the foreign spouses name on it. If it was an interview wouldn't they ask for more documents and have BOTH of our names on it?

It is not the standard interview letter. I asked about the fingerprinting because when the fingerprints fail to be read properly, they can ask for police certificates to be provided. Why not call and ask why you are being asked to bring in police certificates, if you were never informed that the fingerprints failed?

Actually, the police reports are no surprise. They have already asked for police reports long ago in the K1 process, and already have copies of it. There is nothing on the police reports either, just standard police clearance. The only difference is they did not get a copy of a police report from USA (obviously, because the foreign spouse was never in USA before).

Everything went fine with biometrics and fingerprinting.

So maybe they just want some more documents? Maybe they just want the police report from USA?

It is not typical at all. Police certificates are not a requirement for adjusting from a K-1. You do not need to get police certificates from the US because you live here now. It is not something asked of every applicant. I have seen them asked of those whose fingerprints could not be read. Perhaps there is another reason they are asking for them from your wife, but I do not know what it could be. The letter does not even specify what police clearance letters they want or why. I really think your wife should call and ask to speak to a tier 2 immigration officer to ask about her case status and this letter. You can also call and have your wife nearby to tell them she gives her permission for them to discuss her case with you.

It sounds like their background check may have gotten a soft hit on you, and they want to be sure it is or isn't you.

Sorry I forgot to mention but it actually did specify which police reports. It specifically says police reports from the home country, and a police report from the city in USA where we currently live. That was easy to get. We went to the police station (here in USA) and gave ID, then the police searched their system and found nothing, so they gave us a clearance letter.

If we call them will they really be able to tell us anything or will they just have no idea until we actually go there.

The fingerprints were done twice. The first time, the Immigration officer made a mistake, so we had to go again later. The second time, they apologized about that mistake they made the first time. The mistake was that the first immigration officer put the wrong country in the system when he took the fingerprints. So just because of that, we had to repeat the fingerprints.

However, the fingerprints were only repeated for the I-485, and not the I-765 or the I-131. When we repeated the fingerprints, the Immigration officer said that its only important for the I-485 so maybe that's why we did not repeat it for the I-765 and I-131.
