Expired gc + ss (with "authorization needed" wording) + receipt as a new hire?

Hi,

My husband is doing paperwork for a new job tomorrow. He's in ROC limbo... has the receipt that says it extends the GC by a year, his GC, and his SS Card (though it says "not authorized to work without DHS authorization"). I know that he is legally able to work with this documentation, but do you all have any advice/suggestions of evidence to bring in case they give him a hard time?

Thanks!

His expired green card, his original I-751 extension letter and his original social security card.

Why didn't he get a social security card without the restrictions? I applied for jobs recently and only use my DL and SSC. I asked if they wanted to see GC/ extension letter, they said No. I just made sure I had my A# when filling out I-9 form. I don't even think employers should be asking for GC if you can present other documents from the list. He shouldn't have any problems though.

The only time you are required to have the restricted wording removed on your social security card is after you become a US citizen. I haven't gone there to do it either since the nearest SSA office is not exactly nearby.

Same here, I've got my SS when I was a kid through my parents (don't ask how, I don't know) and it had the restriction that "valid only with INS work authorization only". I never bugged to have it removed, only going to when citizenship changes. SSA office is kind of far drive just for a label to be removed.

OP: extension letter, with expired green card, and SS card should suffice for his job. All the best!

He should have no problems with the expired GC, extension letter, and SS card. Ignore any advice about getting a new SS card prior to citizenship. The existence of his GC is the DHS authorization. Good luck! :)

The key word is REQUIRED but why carry SSN with such wording when you can have it removed with your 2 year conditional GC.. I mean its not as if you have to renew your SSN card after some time or pay for re-issue.

Had mine removed after AOS. Never had to show GC to no employer.

Drivers license & SSN card should always suffice and I couldn't be bothered with ROC or not

As others have stated, if it is a long drive plus the two or three hour wait at the local SSA office some people do not feel the time and effort to remove the wording is justified until they are REQUIRED to do so when they become a USC. Yes, a DL and a SSC without the wording works for the I-9 as those are List B items. A GC is a List A item and does not require anything else. A good employer would ask to see your new GC after conditions were removed, but that rarely happens. I have not shown my SSC to any employer in my life. Of course my SSC has the wording "FOR TAX PURPOSES ONLY. NOT FOR ID." A couple of my jobs were before the I-9 form also, but I now show my US passport.

To have the wording removed or not is a personal choice. The OP can use the GC with the extension letter and the employer would be within their rights to ask to see the 10 year GC when it arrives. No need to show a DL and the SSC as the OP would also have to show the GC anyway.

I agree.. it's all about convenience.

A good employer will follow the letter of the law. By requesting I-9 lists of type A or B plus C lists of document and NOT insist on seeing ROC approval or your 10 year GC

since we are talking about personal preference due to cost and time implication,

Personally,

I prefer DL & SSN (cost of replacement $25 & $0.00 respectively)

to

Passport and GC - cost of replacement ($110 & $450 respectively)

But then again, its all down to personal choice

I don't quite understand what happened, but it was fine. They said something about needing to check with USCIS or something, but I don't know if that was e-verify or something else. In any case, his 10 year gc was approved yesterday, so hopefully the card will have arrived in time if there are any other issues.

Good point about the new SS card-- we should probably just get a new one with the 10 yr gc just to keep things from being overcomplicated. Knowing my husband though, he'll probably just wait until it's required!

This is his second job, InLuv... having a job really DOES help with the adjustment! He's still in school, but went from working at a trendy, delicious local deli to a cafeteria that is a part of our state's general assembly. He hates the food and has nothing in common with his coworkers, but gets paid more, has the weekends off, and gets free state health insurance... no complaints there!!
