Praise God for our memorable wedding and thank u VJ friends for helping us through all the stages up to this point in the K-1 process :) What's next on my to do list? Change my SSN and apply for AOS and EAD right? Am I missing something else? BTW we are based in Texas and I already got back our marriage license with the signatures from our county office. I think that's what they have here, license instead of certificate. Thanks and God bless in advance to everyone :)

Wow! Congrats and best wishes to you both! :dancing:

Here's the K1 flowchart: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1flow

-You're now at step #18.

If there's still at least 15 days left in your I-94, you can still apply for SSN: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

-If 14 days or less, you can apply for SSN when you receive your EAD/AP card or GC, whichever comes first.

When you receive your marriage certificate, you can now file for your AOS, EAD & AP. The cost for the latter 2 are waived when you file with AOS. More details here: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

Check out the uscis site for the updated forms and instructions.

Edit: Marriage license is what you apply for before getting married. After the wedding, your county will give you a marriage certificate, but procedure for this varies from county to county. You need to inquire on when you can receive your actual marriage certificate. You can also request for a true copy of the marriage certificate with a small fee. Ours was $10 for each copy here in NJ.

Yup complete AOS and file EAD and AP at the same time (free to do then). The GUIDE here on VJ is pretty good for AOS except for the info on the I-693.. that is slightly inaccurate (as in it is not needed, a copy of the DS-3025 is good for most).

Then don't forget to do the Report of Marriage through the consulate, this can be done by mail.

In some states, such as Texas, there is no official marriage certificate. After the county receives the marriage licence showing that it was solemnised, they stamp and record it and then return this original copy to the newly-married couple. This endorsed marriage licence automagically becomes the marriage certificate.

It's a really annoying system, and I had similar confusion over where my real marriage certificate was initially.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing, Hypnos. I learned something new today. I thought it's somewhat universal in US that a marriage license is different from a marriage certificate. Btw, can couples also request for additional true copies of marriage cert in TX?

This patchwork of what's legal in one state can be illegal in another (or what's done in one place isn't necessarily done in another) is somewhat annoying for someone from the UK, where there are essentially only three jurisdictions (England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland).

You can request a certified copy of a "marriage record" as it's known here (and I did exactly this last year), but all you get back is a photocopy of the front and back of the marriage licence, plus a stamp at the bottom by the county clerk showing that it's a certified copy. It's exactly the same as what you already have, and still carries the same weight as a certified copy of a marriage certificate.

Thanks for the info, Hypnos. It's just a little tricky when people ask and it's actually different to how it's done in their county or state. Ohh well.. I guess what you have shared is really helpful for OP in this case.

Thanks SOOOO much to everyone who replied. I will start reading up on all the steps. My husband has already included me in his insurance so that's a great start. :) Around how much would all these processes cost? It's good that some of the docs are free though:)

SSN application is free, whereas AOS is (currently) $1070. The fees for EAD and AP are waived when you concurrently apply with AOS.

Great to hear about your inclusion to your husband's insurance. Had to remind my husband about that after our wedding too.

Hi Hank! :dancing: I noticed that in the checklist for AOS, EAD, AP application, I-325 and I-864 are included again. If I'm not mistaken, we already filled out these two forms previously as they were required for the I-129 package. Does this mean we need to fill up these two forms again or will the old ones suffice? Thanks!!!

This is a whole new process, you need to provide all the forms requested by USCIS . G-325A & I-864 are required.
