So I have a question regarding a U.S drivers license. My i-94 ran out in Feb and i'm just waiting on my AOS interview date. I received my work permit today and just wanted to know if i was able to get my permit if i showed my EAD as proof of my legal status here? Also if any of you have received your green cards and now have your permit and/or license, what forms did you have to provide in order to get it? Many thanks

It is no different than a citizen applying for a driver's license, you complete whatever form your state requires, show ID, take the written test to get your permit and do the driving test to get your license, in most states I believe the EAD is sufficient for ID and proof of legal presence but you will be issued with a license with limited validity and will need to renew it once you get your green card.

Just make sure you go to SS office first because its needed to apply for drivers permit, if you already have a SSN in maiden name and need to go there to change it I wish you luck because Iv had an absolute nightmare with mine. When I went to change name with all the appropriate docs at SS office they tell me that even though I have a work permit USCIS haven't updated their system so they cant verify my work permission. I thought that was frustrating enough but had assumed that they would atleast change my name so tht I could go and apply for drivers permit. Get to DMV and after a 2 hour wait they tell me that my social security seems to still be in my maiden name so I was turned away. This wouldn't be such a drama but my UK license will no longer be valid because of my work permit arriving and the confirmation from USCIS to SS office could take up to 4 weeks. I work 25 miles from home and not on a bus route so the irony is even though I can legally work I don't really have any way of getting there anymore. Feeling pretty frustrated right now as USCIS have set off a chain reaction that means I cant drive!!

We had good luck finding out the specific state requirements for ID and Driver's Licenses by going to the state DMV/DOL, whatever they call it in your state, website.

Here is the link to the NY DMV: http://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/looking-license-permit-id-card-information

Good luck on your immigration journey.
