Tax Return Not Yet Filed

Every year I file my taxes late by requesting an Extension of Time to File from the IRS. This gives me several extra months to file my taxes.

The N400 asks for the last 3 years of tax returns - but since I file late I do not have a return yet for 2013 I am confused about what to do.

Should I just send the last 3 years of tax returns that were actually filed? Or should I include a note/letter explaining that I filed an extension? Or should I include a signed copy of my Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Tax Teturn with the IRS?

you can send your tax transcripts the last three years 2012-2011-2010- the 2013 you file after april 15 2014 so if you send your file after april 15 then yes you need the year 2013 return

Does anybody else have any insight on this topic? If I send the N400 now before April 15, does that mean I can send just the 2012-2011-2010 tax returns and not worry about the the 2013 return for now?

I didn't send 2013 with my application because I hadn't filed then (end of February)

But I do have the transcript for it now that I've filed and plan to bring it to the interview. If you've already filed the extension then it's worth the peace of mind to send a copy with explanation.

I also need help with this question I'm preparing everything to mail out Around April 17 so far I was just going to include tax returns for past 3 yrs 2010,11 &12 since I don't have 2013 yet is this ok?

Since Tax return is one of the critical docs i also waited for a week after my window for 2013.

I have not filed yet either but planning to file by 4/18/2014 (End of this week) and will send the copy of the 2013 1040 form

Also, i extended my 2012 return and therefore attached the extension acceptance letter with my i-751 application and since i knew i owe $5k, i paid $2k and attached the payment voucher.

I added the following note in my i-751 cover letter:

• Tax Transcript (Married Filing Jointly) for 2012 showing our extension has been accepted by IRS
  1. Our accountant is still working on our tax return for tax year 2012
  2. Copy of our payment vouchers for the partial payment made to the IRS for our federal and state tax year 2012

A tax return is only a "critical [doc]" if applying under the three-year statutue. It becomes almost irrelevant when applying under the five-year statute unless your petition has unusual circumstances.
