Applying for non-driver ID before temporary greencard

Our AOS packet has been received and is being processed. Meanwhile, our I-94 expires mid-March. I wanted to take her to the DMV (in New York) to get her a non-driver's ID card, but have heard they will only make it valid until the date of the I-94. Has anyone had experience with this?

In most states that's usually correct.

We went to the DMV in Chicago, they refused to issue an ID, saying, "we have no proof she will be allowed to stay in the country past her visa date." (Which we were already past visa date stamped in the passport.) After she got her EAD/AP card, we went back, they issued it no problem.

A lot of states need to see at least the EAD first. In FL, they issued my husband a temporary state ID with the EAD. It expired at the same time as his EAD(a year). He had to go back with his green card to get a non-temporary state ID. Check with your state's DMV to find out what is required.
